Believe it or not…that makes sense! No way am I overriding individual items when I get one that runs to about 800 pages. Thanks for all your help on this and everything you do for IDUs!

Very frustrating. I'm just confused because the first page has the numbers the way I want them and the rest are bass-ackwards.

PS. Welcome back!!!! You've been busy since you got back from Lynda.com.

My first thought would be to recreate the pdf. Every once in a while, there seems to be a hiccup when creating a pdf. Other than that, I can't think of ay reason for it to happen.

You are right about the max document size being 5486.4 mm

You can still have paste-board around that page though which allows you to add marks and bleeds.

Okay, it just gets stranger. Each numbered box seems to stand alone. No text threads are shown. That may be because I have number across stories selected.

I initially created the numbered lists on the master page then override them on document page one. Then I just start option-dragging on page 1 (makes 2 page total)…then select page 1 and 2 and option drag both for a 4 page total, and so on, and so on, and so on…

I am not using facing master pages.

What is really odd is that I am not showing any linking between boxes. They should show linking, shouldn't they? The numbered list continues from one box to another…

    Any other ideas?

I appreciate your time on this one!

Doc said…”I do suggest that when you convert the file that you export is an .inx file and then open that. It will clean up any possible corruption or problems that may be lurking in that Quark file.”

That is the soundest advice I've heard and wish I had not learned it the hard way.

I use Q2ID frequently and can't imagine being without it. Consider using it for all old Quark files. It saves keyboarding time and you don't insert typo's.

As you have heard before, Q2ID is not perfect. It is pretty darned good though!

Say goodbye to Quark and smile!

I always refer to it as the “Texas election” rule of computing. In Texas they vote early and often…in computing you should save early and often.

Oh, the stories I can tell!!!

I have been forced to add “This page intentionally left blank” to many publications. The worst ever was that I had to create a page with nothing but the number 14 in the page number position because “people might think that we forgot to print a page” and we can't have that.

Chicago Manual of Style actually has information on correctly numbering pages…I love that book. (I know, its a book, therefore I love it…but this one is always within arms reach of my work station).

Unfortunately, I sometimes lose the page number battle because of my location on the organizational food chain.

This was a great question. I wish that the correct answer(s) was/were taught as part of basic writing, language, and literature courses.

I've had clients who didn't understand the concept that sheets of paper have two sides. They insisted on starting chapters on righthand pages, but when I sent them a printout or even a PDF (with some chapter-ending lefthand pages blank), they said, “I'm not going to pay for all those blank pages! Take them out!

Let's add the ever popular printing request item…1 original. Now the original may have 75 bazillion pages but they still think that is one original!

I'm not sure why people don't get this. Then I'm not sure I get people?????
