I don't think at this time you can set transparencies for table fills & strokes. The table seems to be handled as any other text inside a frame, while you can, if a single background color is all you're using, fill the frame (rather than the cells) with a color and adjust the opacity of that. It still won't let you set the table's stroke opacity but it's a start.

I would use a facing-pages setup, with a two-page master per tab-set (left & right pages) or chapter. So Master A would be for tab 1/chapter 1, Master B for tab 2/chapter 2, etc.

Getting the tabs to line up shouldn't be too hard if you first create the tabs for all chapters on a single spread and then copy/paste-in-place the tabs to their respective master pages.

I'm not sure what you mean by the Kindle version being more expensive. Peachpit's kindle version is $3 less. (You could argue that it should be much less as there is no paper and inventory, but that's a different issue.)

I meant that on Amazon.com the printed book ($37.79) is cheaper than its Kindle version ($41.41). But I've taken this off-topic long enough now. Let's get some folks who've read the books to add their reviews and ratings :)

Je ne parlez pas Francais monsieur Blatner. ;) There is a 5* rating on that Canadian site though.

Off-topic: It kind of ticks me off to see the Kindle version's more expensive than the paperback one. Not that I can use any kind of ebooks right now, but still…

And back on-topic: I haven't read those books. But if/when I do, I'll be sure to leave a comment.

.. well … it's as straightforward as in InDesign. Select text; select “stroke” rather than “fill”, then change the color …

ha… thanks for your kindness on the issue of adding a stroke to text (not laughing me out of the forum). I was actually speaking specifically of the OUTER text stroke in “Illy” (hope you don't mind of I borrow that phrase :)). There's a grayed out option in the stroke window, which is available for other shapes, but not for text. It's also not available if I choose a dashed line with the option where the corner is even all the way around (not sure if there's a special name for that setting, it's the one on the right). I'm using CS5 on a Mac. Maybe other versions are different. Anyways, InDesign seems to make the stroke on the outside, center or inside of text just fine.

    Three words: Illustrator Appearance panel

As far as I'm aware there is indeed no way to apply an outer stroke to text objects in Illustrator, but you can move the stroke down in the stacking order and fake an outer stroke if you're using the Appearance panel, or even stack multiple strokes and/or fills that way.

I have three lines of text in a 95mm wide text frame (font is Myriad Pro at 8pt). The second line ends with https://www.somesite.com. That URL shouldn't be broken into www. and somesite.com unless the frame's too small to hold the URL in one piece. Unfortunately, even with No Break applied to the entire URL, it breaks unless the entire sentence fits on one line.

It wouldn't be bad if No Break actually kept the URL in one piece and moved it in its entirity to the next line, but messing up a URL the way it did seriously ticked me off as I had a sort of deadline to meet.

At least now I know what to look for if No Break doesn't work as expected.

Thanks, but that didn't work (I tried before I posted) but now I've got it working; the no break setting's a load of crap when the Adobe Paragraph Composer is turned on. Setting it to Adobe Single-line Composer makes no break behave as it should.

Since the beginning of time, hasn't a spread always been 2 facing pages?

In the Pages panel fly-out menu, turn off “Allow Document Pages to Shuffle”. You can then snap more than 2 pages into a single spread. It's nice to use when making a Z-fold flyer, or if you're making a brochure/magazine cover with an extra bit that gets folded over.

Maybe you can use the Flippingbook Photographer as a temporary work-around solution until they've added a Mac version for the regular Flippingbook software? It'll probably give less ideal results, but it's relatively cheap and could be enough for what you need done for now.

It works fine for me. In the Print Booklet dialog I click the Print Settings button to go to InDesign's default print dialog, where I can then choose the printer and its settings. When done there, I click the OK button to return to the Print Booklet dialog and I can print to the Adobe PDF printer just fine.

Are you sure that's what you're doing also? It kinda sounds like you're not going to the Print dialog from the Print Booklet dialog…

I have an Iiyama ProLite E2407HDSD as my secondary screen. It's a 24″ widescreen (16:9 ratio) 1920 x 1080p monitor, with DVI and VGA inputs and speakers (haven't tried those). It's a great monitor at less than €200 currently, and it looks great with quite a small bezel compared to some other monitors I've seen.
I bought mine in a hurry, knowing Iiyama hadn't failed me yet, and this one's perfect for me. The 27″ was a bit too expensive for me, and this one hardly fits my desk as it is (I like my desk cluttered, makes it look like I'm working on a lot of stuff :P)

If you're working on the file on your hard drive and using the jump drive (I'm not familiar with that term but assume it's just a USB drive) to keep a back-up copy, there shouldn't be any problems. Working off of a USB drive, with relatively slow performance, can causse a bottleneck when opening and saving, but once opened the file should work fine.

The asterisk in front of the file name simply means the file has been altered, but the program shouldn't freeze. You could try turning off the Live Preflight after you've first opened the file. It can be a huge pain in the rear end if it has to go through a lot of pages after a minor change.

If they've already taken the stance that you're not thinking in their best interest and/or they can do your job themselves – probably falsely believing it'll save them time and money – it might not be a salvagable client.
I'd ask myself this: is it an important enough client to spend any more time trying to retain? If your business can survive without them, I'd cut my losses and move on. There's a good chance they'll return in a while, after they've had some massive failures (increased cost, time spent and possible/probable bad results).

The cover is most likely a different paper kind than the inside. So you could offer a “plain” version to be used inside, and a more flashy one on the cover. It's not the most usual way to do it, but it could work depending on the logo and its treatment on other (printed) materials.

Edit: It's not a tough message to convey, really. The client will end up paying, and it's up to them to decide whether or not it's worth paying the extra money for the cool looking logo.
