MemberIt depends on how much 'customization' is necessary. With properly set up master pages you could probably get quite far by manually setting names and logo's in only a few places, and if it's only a few pages you could data-merge those and then manually insert them in a template file containing all other content.
Without knowing the scope of merge (number of pages, how much data would have to be merged, etc.) it's hard to give precise tips though.

MemberI don't believe those settings can be pre-set.
It's also good to know that PDF security is a joke as there are both free and paid-for programs (I use one that costs around $30) to remove PDF password protection in seconds, as long as no password is required to open the file.

MemberIf IDML is here to stay, that'd work too as it could then stay in use even with CS6 and later.
Bob helped me out this time though. Man I love this site and its forums :)

MemberThanks, just sent it from my Gmail.
It probably won't help, but I'm going to submit downsaving as a feature request. It's nuts that we need to have multiple versions installed or ask others for help in downsaving.

MemberWell it seems moving to a CS5 machine won't help as it gives the same results there. Ideally you'd have the data inside Excel so it has one line (no line breaks) per field: Name, Function, Address, Address 2, ZIP, etc. etc. but since that's not the case we need to look at alternative methods.
I don't have Office here at home, but OpenOffice Calc lets me export to CSV files. They contain the data correctly, but with every line break inside the field as a character, at least when viewed inside Notepad. It should be possible to do a Find/Replace on that line break character to replace it with a character you won't normally see used (like the | ) or a combination of characters (like <|> ) which you can then re-replace after the merge. Just make sure there's enough room for every line inside the text frame before you start merging.
I'm no good with Office applications so maybe I'm missing something very obvious, like a method to break the data into columns… In any case I do hope you'll manage to get somewhere with this.

MemberI'm not sure how easy the hot pink is to read, even if it does help make the various items stand out. Why isn't there any on the last page though?
Personally I'd look into top-aligning the text in the table as it looks cleaner to me, but that's quite subjective.Lastly, I've never before seen anyone copyrighting their CV…

MemberI've been swamped with work, but I'll see if I can get this figured out once I get home in about 90 minutes. It must be possible and shouldn't require switching to a mac ;)

MemberYou could export to SWF with the page curl turned on, and place that SWF into InDesign to export as a PDF. The SWF should retain its interactivity although I'm not sure how well the page curl will work as it seems to require quite some space on web pages. Also, it doesn't have a pre-loader animation as Adobe hasn't added the option, so if the SWF gets big and people don't have to download the file, it can take a long time (depending on how big the SWF file is and the speed of your host and their internet connection) before anything appears to be happening.

MemberGlad I could help :)
It's probably a good idea to export those presets and save them on a backup drive or even just a USB drive. If you use Gmail you can do what I do: email them to yourself. That way you'll always have easy access to them, especially if you use a label for work-related items.

MemberMy mouse/keyboard combo (a first generation Logitech DiNovo set) is getting so old it needs to be replaced. At least the mouse, as it won't charge in its cradle anymore. So I've just ordered a Kensington Orbit trackball with scroll ring (€26.50 from Amazon.co.uk incl. taxes and shipping to the Netherlands, €50 from Kensington Netherlands). If that thing doesn't work for me at work, I'll take it home (I use the computer far less there) and bring my Logitech MX Revolution* mouse to work as that's the most perfect mouse for my hand I've ever found. Unfortunately the newer model costs around €90 and that's a tad more than I'm willing to spend at the moment.
Next month Logitech's releasing a new keyboard that's solar-powered, and I'll be getting one of those as well. Goodbye batteries!
More on-topic: I've had a Wacom Cintiq for years now and while I absolutely love it for Photoshop and certain Illustrator tasks, I hate it for everything else. It's just not a mouse replacement with its often finicky double-clicks and dragging/aligning of objects can be a huge pain in the rear end (although smart guides do help).
I'd say you're doing the right thing: use your Wacom tablet for what it's made/intended for and use a mouse/trackball for regular tasks.* link to Amazon.com as I can't find any good images of it on Logitech's own site since it's an older model mouse that's been updated without the thumb-scroll wheel.

MemberIf it's a swatch color that's really in-use you could try deleting the swatch. You'll then get a warning asking what to replace the swatch with. Since you can't find the object that's using that particular color you can then replace it with the black swatch.

MemberTry File > Document Presets > Define. There you can either edit or delete your saved document presets.
Personally, I'd not delete or edit them until after I've created back-ups of my existing presets. You never know if you need them again.November 10, 2010 at 12:59 am in reply to: trying to turn Facing Pages On or Off crashes InDesign #57639Roland
MemberAre you on Mac or Windows? Which version of the OS? Which version of InDesign? Is this with new (blank) documents and with existing ones, or …?

MemberIn the merge options you can set the merge to put multiple records per page. Just keep in mind the frames don't automatically scale, and as such you could end up with overset text or lots of empty space depending on how you set up the 'template' frame and the word count of the records.

MemberUnless each entry consists of a lot of data I wouldn't worry about 800+ entries to data merge inside InDesign. I've done 1000+, admittedly plain text only, mulit-column entries without a single hiccup. Should it turn out to be too much for InDesign to handle, it might still work if you cut the job into two or three pieces.
Personally I'd rather do it all inside InDesign, but I'm no good with Word so I'm definitely biased.I use Index Brutal to create indexes based on the keywords the client wants in there. It does its job remarkably well, and the cost of $0 makes it more than worth it.
