I know this is an old post, but still… I like to set this up with nested styles in the paragraph style and one character style.

    My text looks like this:
    [text][space][tab][space][$/€][tab][123.45]

I create a character style (I'll call it “tab” here) that's got a japanese dot underline set up, nothing else.

The nested style inside my paragraph style then gets set up like this:
    [none] up to 1 tab
tab (character style) through 1 tab
[none] up to 1 forced line break
    [repeat]

The reason I use a tab between the $/€ and numbers is to be able to keep those aligned nicely.
The spaces around the first tab are just to keep the line from touching the text as I don't like that look very much.

I'll fess up right now and state I'm not sure I'm thinking about the same thing here, but my company wants me to turn some documents into fillable PDF forms. We'll use the Distribute option in Acrobat (or Acrobat Pro) to create a distributable PDF and then manually email it to clients who'll then email the filled-out form back for us to get the data from (again in Acrobat or Acrobat Pro). That's not the same as the “Reader Extended” thing you guys are talking about, is it?

mchak, sorry I didn't reply sooner. I got the email there was a reply but it didn't show up until I checked today…
I'll look into the EmSoftware programs. The EmData package seems to do exactly what we'd need for only a little more than Teacup's 2 programs.

lkelley36, that software seems quite expensive ($1299 for the software + $199 for the ODBC module) compared to EmSoftware's EmCatalog and EmData, Teacup's DataLinker and Cacidi's LiveMerge. I'll keep it in mind, but very much doubt my (potential) future employer will be willing to spend $1500 when he can get the same for a couple hundred dollars less :)

Thanks Caprica, but David emailed me yesterday and converted it for me. I'm all set now.

Try disabling Preflight. I found that working on 100+ page documents with lots of graphics and text, Preflight tends to go through the entire document very often, taking up resources you don't need used, especially when all you're doing is adding new blank pages.

Just remember to use Preflight before you export/save/package your files.

If a style has been applied to the item you want to search & replace, then yes you can use a GREP find/replace:
Search for r and replace it with n to replace End Of Paragraphs with Forced Line Breaks. These, and many other common GREP items are easy to find if you click the the little @-button at the right of the text field.
Then set the Find Format to the style you've applied (click the T with loupe icon) so it doesn't replace the Paragraph ends anywhere but in the text with the style you choose.

You can also use the Change Format option to set a new Paragraph style if you want or need to.

I'm not sure I quite understood the original problem, but if you have a facing-pages document that needs to be exported as a PDF with single-pages, you just have to make sure that in the Export Adobe PDF dialog, on the General page the option “Spreads” isn't checked.

If you do want the facing-pages document to be exported to PDF as you see it on screen inside InDesign, just check the “Spreads” option.

There's no need to change the page layout inside InDesign to create a single-page PDF from a facing-pages InDesign document.

I honestly don't think InDesign was meant to make (big) Flash files with. It's never going to optimize things the way Flash Pro will, plus it doesn't add a pre-loader animation to let your visitors know they're going to have to wait a bit for the animation/site to get going.

Have you looked at ready-made slideshow options to show off a portfolio? There are Flash options using external XML files for easy maintenance, or AJAX-based options (easy to add to pages from within DreamWeaver using the Widget Browser). Or you could consider making a nice-looking site with 'plain' pages offering the visitors a glimpse, with the ability to download a more extensive (interactive) PDF.

If you add a new printer in the OS (Mac OS or Windows) itself using the same settings (IP address, port, etc. etc.) as for your existing printer, and set its default properties to print in black & white by default, you can then create a print preset in InDesign that uses that printer by default.

Thanks, I'll give the Rorohiko one a go on a test file at home tonight, as the other one isn't available for Windows (stupid developers ignoring such a large group of users) and as I'm not supposed to charge the client (it's surprising how cheap 'rich' folk tend to be).

I tried that once (in a previous version of InDesign) and couldn't get it to save the settings somehow and became convinced you can't save the security settings in a preset. Must remember to double-check before giving an answer :)

It's baffling why the CS4 file wouldn't open in my installations of InDesign CS5 (neither at work nor at home, with different PC specs and additional software) but I now know I need to get InDesign CS4 installed again somewhere :)

Thanks, I'll ZIP the file I need most importantly and send it to you.

I'll still go ahead and try installing InDesign CS4 at home this weekend. I can't keep bothering others when my files won't open in CS5 or when I need to down-save for CS3 :)

Yeah I was afraid that'd be the answer I'd be getting :)

I guess I could try uninstalling the Creative Suite on this computer (my home PC), installing InDesign CS4 (that should be enough, right?) and then reinstalling CS5. Is there anything I need to keep in mind before I start this process? I'll wait until Saturday or Sunday as then I'll have more time, won't be as sick of computers as I am when I get home, and will have plenty of time to plan the process (backing up preferences and such).
