Where is my automatic numbers in the table??

      Hi ‎

      (In CS5) I create a table (Table < Insert Table) with 4 columns and 5 rows for example, then select ‎the first column (either left or right) and go to Type > Bulleted & Numbered List > Apply Numbers ‎menu. But I can’t see the automatic numbers. I’m sure the automatic numbers applies to my ‎column; because Apply Numbers command change to Remove Numbers under Type > Bulleted & ‎Numbered List menu. So why this happens, would you please to help me to fix it and return my ‎numbers!‎

      Assuming your cells are empty, you just need to enter some text and the numbers will show up.

      Yes, you told me correctly. When I insert a character or some characters in column that applies automatic numbers, they are appear and when I delete the character(s), the numbers also disappear, it is reasonable because there is no text in front of the numbers in theirs cells. But I don’t want it. I want a column with only numbers without any characters in front of them, because I fill and insert my text in the other columns and cells, Why InDesign doesn’t keep my numbers without any character and it makes me to insert at least a character in front of my numbers? I apply a trick and that’s answer me; I use and insert a space character (Spacebar key) in front of any numbers and suddenly the numbers show up, but I think it isn’t interesting; because when I try to resize column numbers to narrower it, overset text happens,

      Masoud:

      Two things will help with the overset problem

      1. use another invisible like a hair space (instead of the space bar): Type>Insert White Space>Hair Space

      2. adjust the tab space: Type>Tabs, select the column then press Control+Shift (Windows) and drag the bottom triangle to adjust the space

      Even with the characters invisible, you'll be able to see the adjustment. You can then resize the column width.
