OK is there a way to made the rule offset in paragraph rules flexible so the space is used when vertical justification is applied to a text frame.
For example I have a list of cars for sale and the customer insists on a horizontal rule between each listing.
The last line of the listing is a price which I would like to use the paragraph rule to separate it from the next listing.
However the customer wants the spaces above a below the rule to expand and contract depending on the number of items in the column.

What I wish was in the the paragraph rule dialog box was instead of offset but some choice indicating that this space was flexible depending on the number of listing in the column.

It’s not a great solution, but you could make a series of paragraph styles with different settings and apply them based on how many items you had in the column. If it were only a few variations, and a short document, this might be a viable approach.

Alternately, you could have a separate paragraph that is blank, following the price, and that is the one that has the rule style applied to it. Either just a return, or, if that will mess up your QA, you could have a special character such as an em space or any of the fixed white space characters, so you don’t see two returns in a row when doing QA checking. Not sure if that will give you the desired result. But I don’t know of any “proportional” scaling option in the paragraph rules dialog.

Thanks for the suggestions, basically I have solved this with an inline graphic that is just a drawn line with a hard return all other returns are hard returns so all the extra space goes with the inline graphic. It just requires a couple of extra steps to complete involving some find and replace scripts.
