      Hi everyone!

I do a lot of tables of contents (lists of drawings, formulas, photographs, tables, etc), but they all have one flaw. They are as follows (all the width of column):

      ~~

Tab. 1. The very long and descriptive caption. The very long and descriptive caption. The very long
and descriptive caption. The very long and descriptive caption. The very long and descriptive caption.
The very long and descriptive caption………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..10

      ~~

Number 10 is a page number; between the caption and page nubmer I use a Right Indent Tab. Its simple setup and everything is clear so far I hope.

But I would like this TOC to look a little different. I’d like the caption does not extend the entire width of a text frame (as if it had teh right margin of about 100 pts), but not the number of page; the number I’d like to extend all th way to the right side until the end of a column.

So to make it look like this:

      ~~

Tab. 1. The very long and descriptive caption. The very long
and descriptive caption. The very long and descriptive caption.
The very long and descriptive caption. The very long and des-
criptive caption. The very long and descriptive caption……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..10

      ~~

In the past I’ve done this by inserting a ‘Soft Enters’ in the right places in the caption – but this was very time-consuming. Now I do it semi-automatically by pasting a rectangle with a defined text wrap to each caption, and adjust its height individually – its a liitle faster method than inserting soft enters, but definitely this is not an elegant way, and its also time consuming…

Is there a way to achive this in a simple, elegant and effective way? Any suggestion is welcome!

      PS
Thanks in advance for understanding my poor English, hope I’m clear enough.

I’ve done this before using a combination of right indent and whites space characters, but usually only in TOCs that don’t include tab leader dots.

First, set up the right indents based on how much white space you want between your text and your page number. If you want 1 inch of white space, set the Right Indent to 1in and the Last Line Right Indent to -1in. This will push all your text over except the last line which will extend to the edge of the frame. (This is not quite done because this allows more than just the page number and tab separator to extend to the edge of the frame.)

Second, in the TOC settings, add a few em spaces before your tab character in the TOC page number separator (the number of spaces depends on how much white space you need). So your separator would be something like ^m^m^t. The em spaces should prevent any text from extending into the white space. But, tab leader dots can’t be applied to the em spaces, so if those are necessary this method may not work for you. It’s possible you could use the right indents for a partial solution and then add soft returns where it doesn’t quite work out. It’ll still be some soft returns, but it should be a lot less.

      Update:

I used a few dots instead of em spaces in TOC definition (……^y inseadt of ^m^m^m^y) and aplied one letter style to all of it – and now I have tab leader dots as usual.

If someone would be interesting – I named the letter style I aplied to dots: ‘dots’. :)

      Mike, thanks again!

My problem is with the index. Since it’s generated automatically, I can’t do any of the above.
I gave it the right indent and negative last line indent, but my client doesn’t want the listing to come all the way to the page number. They want the line to break so that it always has some leader showing.
      I hope I’m clear.
