Second line of paragraph "jumps" to create unwanted gap

The first word of every paragraph in my publication has a character style with greater leading than the rest of paragraph. When I make certain alterations to the layout (place or move a graphic with text wrap, adjust page margins, add a border to text box, etc.) the second line of the paragraph affected sometimes “jumps” down. It appears the leading is off, but the leading numbers don’t change. To fix this gap between the first and second lines of the paragraph, all I have to do is type into the paragraph, or change the alignment, or adjust anything really, and the line jumps back up to the correct position.

This only happens sometimes, to some paragraphs. I haven’t been able to isolate the variable. All paragraphs are formatted the same. There is no auto-leading. It is not aligned to grid.

In using InDesign 2019. Any help would be much appreciated.

What is your reason for the added leading to one word? When I did it (from 14 to 18), InDesign just moved the whole paragraph down four points. Why not just use a space before or space after?

I’m managing the space between paragraphs with leading because I need only a few points of separation. The space between paragraphs is way too big if I use returns.

I don’t mean “space” as in the Space Bar, I mean Paragraph Style Options > Indents and Spacing panel > Space Before (or After) fields.

Oh, I see. (I just switched to InDesign from old software that didn’t have a paragraph spacing option.) Yes, if I space paragraphs in style options as you say, the weird “jump” doesn’t happen between first & second lines.

I suppose I’ll have to live with the bug I’ve created by mixing leadings, and then set my styles up more intelligently for the next project.

      Thank you!
