      Hello,

I was wondering if anyone knows of a way (indesign plug-in or manual technique) to split an image across all the edges of the pages in a book.
every page has a 3mm piece on the edge with the image slightly moving with every page, this way creating the effect of a full image when the book is bended.
The image is not printed on the sides of the pages, but on the edges..
this is a good example of what im talking about:

      thank you very much!

That’s awesome. I always wanted to do that with one of our large books. I’m sure it could be scripted, but I don’t recall seeing one.

Hey David, thanks for the reply.

I think it involves calculating the number of pages and moving the image an x number of mm up or down on every page, but i am quite at loss as to how its done.
here’s a video link to get a better look at the edges.

I’ve made an attempt at providing such thing – try this:

Not sure if it fits the bill – let me know!

      Cheers,

Hi Kris, your script is very useful. Only a question: what measure unit do you adopt for paper thickness? Micron or other? Thanks for your answer.

      Hey Kris!

Just tried your attempt and there is one things that would be great as improvement:
A param like “reverse:1/0” for images on the left pages, so you can achieve two different images for bending the book in both directions.

      Cheers Lukas

I have been wondering the same thing. Here is the best quality of that kind of printing I have seen…

If you scroll down the page, there are even better pictures of it. Have you made any progress in finding out how this is done?

I work for a printer and he told me this is called fore edge printing. Here is a link to a video for that…

Actually this might be a lot easier to control if the binding is perfect bound, and the printing is done in blocks rather than folded signatures since the position wouldn’t need to change to accommodate creep in the page position. There’s still a need to move the image inside the frame along the page edge incrementally, though.
