      Hi there,

I’m trying to create an ID template for our Offering Memorandums that lets me automatically populate it with Data from different sources like Excel sheets or Word documents. My goal is to have a folder with my InDesign file, a subfolder with data documents and a subfolder with my images. Every time I need to prepare a new OM I just copy the main folder, replace the images with new ones (same file names) and replace the Excel, Word and CSV files and then just relink/refresh.

So far I’ve been playing with the File -> Place function which lets me import certain tables from my Excel files. Unfortunately I don’t see the Excel file in the Links tab in ID. Any idea where I can find it? Without the ability to refresh these links my whole won’t work…

Is Data Merge the better way to go here?

How do you guys mass-produce files with the same layout but different text and images?

What you’re describing sounds cool, but may be harder than expected. That said, this article/video should help get you started with linking excel files:

      Hi David,

I just saw that video but this time i paid more attention to what he said in the beginning. I forgot to set it up in the preferences so thank you David.

Unfortunately it still messes up my formatting when I update the links so I’m going to try Data Merge. Maybe this gets the job done better.

Unfortunately Data Merge isn’t a feasible solution either since all information need to be on the top of the sheet and it has to be a txt or csv file.

Is there a way to place Excel sheets in InDesign without using the original formatting? This way I would be able to replace the Excel files and reopen the InDesign Template and just refresh the links.

      Help?
