MemberDear all,
It is possible to find text by: Edit>Find/Change. But – in InDesign CS5 – if the text frame was locked, there is no result to find any text.
What is the solution to find text in locked text frame?
Note: It is possible finding text in locked text frame in InDesign CS3.
Best Regards.

MemberIn the find dialoag, there's a row of buttons, the first two allow for “Include Objects on Locked Layers” and for “Include Locked Stories”. Check the approppriate one for how you locked your objects, and try searching again.

MemberThank you vasha for your interest.
I tried all icons in Find/Replace dialog box without benefit.
Please follow these steps to reproduce this problem:
1- Open InDesign CS5.
2- Make a text frame.
3- Type a text.
4- Lock the text frame.
5- Find or Find and replace a text which typed in step 3 above.
Result:
Cannot find match.
Expected results:
Find and replace the text, like InDesign CS3 and CS4.
Is this problem occur with you too?

MemberOne might guess that people were actually objecting to the CS3 and CS4 behavior: if you lock a frame to prevent it from changing and do a global replace on the “remaining” text, text in the locked frames was also changed. That could be called a bug.
In this case, CS5's behavior is more consistent: if you lock something, you cannot change it until you unlock it.

MemberThank you Jongware for your explanation and it is really logical speech.
But, someone needs locking a text frame to prevent a mistake movement ONLY.
I think that it is necessary to add an option to lock a text frame completely or to lock its movement only.

David BlatnerKeymasterIDcs5 DOES allow you to find text in a locked object (click the first button in the find/change dialog box). But it does not allow you to change text in locked objects.
I can see your point about locking position vs. position AND content. However, most people want both locked.
The best solution is to place your kind of locked objects on a layer and then lock the layer (in Layer Options). Then you can quickly unlock it when you want to find/change. Then lock it again.

I tried all icons in Find/Change dialog box, but InDesign CS5 cannot find nor replace a text in locked text frame.
This current status of InDesign CS5 causes a big problem:
Someone who typed and designed books by InDesign CS3 and CS4, cannot use InDesign CS5 to find or change a text because he/she must unlock all text frames in all the hundreds pages. This is very hard, and the best solution in this case is staying with CS3 or CS4.
Therefore, It is very necessary FROM ADOBE to release an update urgently to add an option to enable users locking text frame position OR text frame position and content.

Anne-Marie ConcepcionMemberWow, I can see how this new behavior would really mess up your workflow. I'm not sure though how quickly Adobe can turn around a feature request like you suggest (lock position or position & content). Perhaps if you posted this to the InDesign scripting forum, someone might know of a script or could build one for your company at a low cost that would at least unlock these items for you?

In my CS5, the Find in Locked Stories isn't working. I get an alert, “The found object was locked or on a locked layer.” and that's it. It doesn't highlight the word or tell me which frame it's in (and the open-story-editor trick doesn't work). Is this just my wonky copy?

This problem from InDesign CS5, not from your copy, because I found this problem with more than one.
This problem obliges users to cancel (using InDesign CS5 idea) until solution release.

InactiveFor Normal FIND CHANGE
It does work if you check the Include Locked Layers and Include Locked Stories!
BUT it comes back with a warning that it's “on a locked layer” which it isn't
Which might be a clue to how Locked Stories are now treated in CS5
For GREP Find/Change
And also very interesting that if you use the GREP search and have both the Include Locked Layers and Locked Stories selected it will highlight the text.
But you cannot perform any sort of change.
But this is documented in the Tool Tip for the Include Locked Stories and Locked layers as “Find Only”
Still – it's a pain in the bee-hind!
I'd say it's a bug.

Anne-Marie ConcepcionMemberEugene, excellent workaround! I agree, it has to be a bug that CS5 won't highlight found text in a locked frame during a normal Find/Change. Good to know it works in the GREP pane (where you could do just about the same type of plain text Find ) Thanks!

InactiveActually on closer inspection:
This is what is happening
If you open the Layers Panel you will see that it has a Triangle beside the Layer Name, you can click this to twirl down what's in the layer.
When you lock and Object, it's actually locking it on a Sub Layer, not sure how CS3 or CS4 handled Locking Stories, but there certainly were no sublayers prior to CS5
So you can actually lock an object on the Sub Layers just as you can by selecting it an going to Object>Lock Object.
Not sure how this helps?

InactiveI think a few dialog boxes in InDesign need to be overhauled, the locked stories button seems to be redundant in CS5?

MemberHello InDesigners,
I finally upgraded to CS5, and I immediately ran into the problem you've described. Sorry I'm coming in a bit late on all this, but it looks like the post was never resolved. Here's a solution for not being able to edit text in a locked text frame:
- Go to general preferences/Object Editing.
- Uncheck “Prevent Selection of Locked Objects.
I hope this helps.

MemberThank you Hal,
Your solution is for selecting locked objects, not for Find/Change a text in a locked text frame.
This problem prevents ID CS3 and CS4 users to upgrade to ID CS5.
Simply,
By InDesign CS5, how can user edit ID CS3 and CS4 files which contain tens or hundreds locked text frames?
Regards.

InactiveYou can use the GREP tab to find text in locked frames… but you wont' be able to change them.
Objects lock differently in CS5 – open the Layers Panel and there is a sub layer for each layer – beside each layer is a Locked symbol.
If CS5 is an issue for you then don't upgrade – I didn't upgrade to CS4 because of an error in Style Mapping.

MemberI know that objects lock differently in CS5, but this situation – and your error Style Mapping – cut communication among versions.
Your solution is useful in ID CS5 only. But what about a file which created by ID CS3 and CS4 and want to edit it by CS5?
Yes, if Adobe don't solve this problem, then the solution is not upgrade.

MemberGenerally speaking, it's not wise to open an existing file for editing in a newer version. You just might have to edit more than you think.
With every upgrade cycle, I took care not to do this, and I haven't had any of these problems at all.
(Only time I did get problems was when I got weird results with an existing file template; then again, it turned out that particular original file went all the way back to the original CS. So a simple saving as IDML cleansed that one.)

MemberIt is possible to Find/Change a text by:
1- Unlock all text frames in the document.
2- Find/Change properly.
3- Lock all text frames in the document if you prefer.
How? The full solution is:
