When selecting a PDF export setting, I can select the full rage of PDF options that install with InDesign, including the PDFx1a and PDFx4 options.
But when it comes to complying with a standard, only the PDFx1 compliance is available, and the PDFx4 options are grayed out.

A preflight in Acrobat confirms that my PDFx4 output isn’t PDFx4 compliant to the standard.

How do I reinstall the complete set of PDF export standards?

Unfortunately, the image link you posted doesn’t work (it requires us being logged in).

There is a difference between the PDF Presets and the PDF compatibility. The preset will set up the various settings in the dialog box to make it compliant. The compatibility will be enabled or disabled based on what you have manually changed.

The preview link should now be fixed.
I have the PDFx4 option selected, but the compliance standard is unavailable.
I don’t recall having seen this issue before. I’ve checked other workstations on site and they have same behavior (Mac Mojave cc2015; I’ll be testing in cc2019 and cc2018 as well this afternoon.)

OK, yes, that is strange. Quitting and restarting doesn’t fix it? Have you tried rebuilding your InDesign preferences yet? Hard to know…

      Ahhhh: Answer discovered.
The PDFx4 standard was made unavailable due to color management being turned off.
I can’t claim any genius status for figuring this one out — the Export Adobe PDF panel contained a warning and message in the summary: “2) The preset specifies PDF/X-3 or PDF/x-4 for “Standard.” The “Standard” setting will be set to “None” because color management is turned off.”

Solution: Turn color management on, then all options become available.
This appears to be true in cc2015, cc2018, and cc2019.

Also note that color management settings for “North America General Purpose 2” don’t prompt for warnings, while “North America Prepress 2” will.

Color Management turned off?! It was disabled in the Color Settings dialog box? Yeah, that’s not recommended at all… there is no such thing as truly turning of color management, so basically setting it to Off just means “do color management without actually telling me what you’re doing and don’t let me tell you how to do it right.”

But that’s fascinating that it has that effect… thank you for telling us here. I’m sure it’ll help someone else someday.
