      Hey guys,

I've been hunting around the net with little success on an annoying problem I've got. Firstly I couldn't find a way for indesign to display Asian fonts correctly. I've been supplied with a Word doc set out in Korean characters. After some fiddling I've managed to get the characters to display correctly in Word and was hoping it would be as easy as copying the text from Word and pasting into indesign, but indesign gives me lots of random symbols – even when I select a Korean font from the fonts menu. After doing some reading I learnt that I may need to enable Korean in my mac preferences – which made no difference. A work around I've found is that I can copy and paste the characters from Word into illustrator (they display correctly in illustrator) then copy and paste them from illustrator into indesign.

SO, my question: Is there a way to copy the characters directly from Word into indesign without involving illustrator?

      I'm running CS4 creative suite on os x 10.6.5

      Ta.

Copy and paste almost never works with non-English text. Using File > Place can work in some situations, though you'll need to set the font correctly after it gets into InDesign.

There is a good article by Diane Burns in InDesign Magazine from a year or two ago about Asian text in InDesign. Might check the back issues.

Cool, thanks mate. I'd appreciate it. At the moment I'm working my way through copying and pasting via illustrator. It's working okay but its a 91 page doc and text has been setup in boxes (in Word) with about 4 boxes per page. I've been at it for hours and am only about half way through, and when I'm done I'll have 2 more docs to do. I have no idea if the correct formatting is intact. I never thought I'd say it but I think this is the first time MS Word has trumped indesign!
