You have a good grasp of the technology, Colin. However, I think the point isn't “can you” use 300 ppi or use JPG, but “must you”? I think what Mike and James and others are trying to point out is that the myths say “you must!” and the reality is that the only thing “you must” do is learn the underlying reasons, not just follow blindly.
