You can use the GREP tab to find text in locked frames… but you wont' be able to change them.

Objects lock differently in CS5 – open the Layers Panel and there is a sub layer for each layer – beside each layer is a Locked symbol.

If CS5 is an issue for you then don't upgrade – I didn't upgrade to CS4 because of an error in Style Mapping.
