Ah yes, you're right. Hmmph. Maybe it's the autonumbers/bullets that have been tweaked between CS3 and CS4.

I was able to get the same final effect in CS4 by filling the circle with Paper as before, and then from the Effects panel, setting the circle's Fill to the Hue blend mode. Assuming the type is black, that keeps the circle white regardless of the underlying pixels.
