Can you see this “grid” (the vertical lines of light and dark) in the PDF that you export? Or is it only when you print it?

It is possible that the PDF export settings are affecting the image. Perhaps you should use Zip instead of JPEG compression, or change the jpeg compression amount when exporting to PDF from InDesign?
