The Design + Accessibility Summit | A CreativePro Online Event, November 16–19, 2021

NOTE: The following is from the 2021 event. To see details on our 2022 event, click here.

The Design + Accessibility Summit, the essential HOW-TO event for design professionals who need to master accessibility, is now available on-demand!

It’s no secret that accessibility is currently a hot topic. In fact, ensuring your documents are accessible is not just a good idea: it's the law. Whether you’re extending your company’s DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) focus, expanding your market to include the estimated 25% of the population who have disabilities, or safeguarding your company against legal risks, it’s important to make accessibility a business priority.

Creative professionals must learn how to design accessible documents that are inclusive of people with vision and hearing impairments, mobility challenges, cognitive, and other disabilities. And those who ramp up their knowledge and expertise in accessibility will find themselves in high demand supporting their business’ efforts; while those who don’t will risk falling behind.

At The Design + Accessibility Summit, you will learn practical techniques for building accessible documents with Adobe InDesign, Acrobat, Microsoft PowerPoint, and other tools widely used by creative professionals.

  • What does it mean to be ADA and Section 508 compliant, and conform with WCAG guidelines? (Note: this event covers both U.S. and international accessibility topics)
  • PDF remediation: Step by step to ensuring compatibility
  • Best practices for paragraph and character styles
  • Making social media accessible
  • Becoming the accessibility expert in your company
  • Essential add-ons and utilities
  • The InDesign to Acrobat PDF workflow
  • Inclusive features and best practices for Adobe Illustrator
  • Accessible EPUB: It's possible!
  • Designing content for low visual acuity and screen readers
  • Principles for ensuring your web site is accessible
  • Techniques for maintaining accessibility in both remote and live presentations
  • Building accessible PowerPoint, Excel, and Word documents suitable to share with clients and your team

Color: What You Need to Know
Colleen Gratzer

Color is a powerful tool that affords seemingly endless design possibilities, but we often design with only one type of color vision in mind—our own. Make sure that accessibility and aesthetics go hand in hand with every design you create. Learn what color accessibility is (and why it matters); choose appropriate colors and implement testing; and snag a few key tips and tricks to get your color game plan together. You’ll become a better, more empathetic designer by discovering how other people see the world.

Learn:

  • Who benefits from accessible color choices
  • Guidelines pertaining to color and contrast
  • How to check color and contrast
  • How to resolve issues
  • Why it’s important for designers to think about accessibility as early as possible in the design process, even at the branding stage
  • How to assess and remediate an existing color palette
  • How to check your design work for color accessibility and how to resolve issues for a more balanced design
  • How to guide clients, colleagues, and stakeholders about color choice in all aspects of their marketing (documents, websites, etc.)

10:30 AM – 11:30 AM Pacific
Alt Text: Everything You Need to Know
AmyJune Hineline

Topics include:

  • Understanding the various types of Alt text
  • Why artifacting some images is so critical
  • How to make text convey visual information in a meaningful way

12:30 PM – 1:30 PM Pacific
Best Practices for Accessible Social Media Design
Jessica Oddi

Social media is a critical component of any company’s messaging, allowing them to share information and deliver services quickly and effectively. We have a responsibility to ensure that our social media content is usable and accessible by everyone, including those with disabilities.

This session is a practical guide to the different ways in which you can make your social media content more accessible. While social media platforms offer some features for making their online experiences more accessible, none are 100% accessible. For example, contrast, text size and reading order cannot be altered because they are part of each platform’s design.

In this course, you will learn about best practices that apply to all social media platforms along with specific how-to’s for creating accessible photos and videos in the following social media platforms:

  • Instagram
  • Twitter
  • YouTube
  • Facebook
  • LinkedIn

1:45 PM – 2:45 PM Pacific
Accessibility for Video and Audio
Carie Fisher

In this session, we’ll cover the fundamentals for accessible media, including transcripts, captions, and audio descriptions. We’ll also look at what makes an accessible media player, and explore the specific WCAG standards that apply to multimedia.

3:00 PM – 4:00 PM Pacific
