      Hi!

I came today because I’m frustrated!

We got this feature in Indesign, we pack our document and I understand this as a way to automate our work.. But it actually seems not.

I work on windows and whenever I got indesign projects from mac, I’ll go through missing fonts and links.

So, I go to the links panel, and should link ’em manually. So far so good BUT, when it comes about fonts I always got problems. It doesn’t really matter if the fonts were saved in the package because when I go to the folder ‘fonts’ and try to install ’em, indesign still do not recognize.

I also got the same problem working from windows to windows, it’s not that frequently as mac though. Everything led to me think those conflicts are caused by different versions of fonts and ID which makes me think again: “well… if we take all of this into account, it doesn’t work pack feature. I always have to do the manual work”

      Any thoughts might help me?

Usually, if you move an InDesign file from Mac to Windows (or Windows to Mac), the linked images update automatically (if the images are in the Links folder of the Package). Perhaps the person creating the Package is not doing it right?

The fonts problem could be 2 things: If the fonts are Typekit fonts, then you may have to install them (Sync them) with Typekit when you open the document.

But if the fonts are not OpenType fonts, then sometimes they will be Mac-only fonts. This is a problem people have had for 25+ years! However, if you use OpenType fonts, then this should not be a problem, because those work on Mac and Windows.

There are two ‘flavours’ of OpenType font: PostScript (.otf) and TrueType (.ttf); an OpenType font wil show the extension that matches its ‘flavour’. You should have no trouble using either on Windows. A .dfont, on the other hand, is a Mac OS X data fork font and they are only supported on the Mac OS. They can be converted for use on Windows but I would use cross-platform fonts instead.

        Thanks for clarifying the ‘flavours’.

Ok, but it still not making any sense though.

OpenType fonts should work whether in Mac or Windows, right? In my project we do have OpenType font. So why can’t ID in my computer recognize them? And plus, they are fonts generated from the package, that means: I’m not looking for any other version of those fonts, I’m just trying to use the exactly same OpenType font that was generated from the packge. This drive me nuts.

I think the package doesn’t really work. It will only help you in certain circumstances or situations. I got projects where I’d just open and install fonts and it’s fine, but sometimes even the project coming from windows or mac and installing generated fonts, ID will accuse ‘font missing’.
