Numbering graphic frames

      Hi,

Is there a way to attach/anchor a text frame (a number) to the corner of a graphic frame.
The text frame should stay attached to the corner if I need to resize the graphic frames with a gap tool.
I want to create a assembly instruction with steps in separate frames – looks like it is not that easy as I thought.
I tried grouping the frames, but the frames won’t stay attached if I try to resize.
It should look something like this :

      Hi Kaimar,

this isn’t possible with InDesign. You can try, if it works with the Autofit-plugIn from Typefi. However: Another way would be to give your images names and avoid the textframes first. After everything is done, a script could set the numbering based on the name.

If this doesn’t work for you, the script could remove the number in the selected frame and put it back after you have scaled the frame.

So, there are several things possible.

      Kaimar,

      I enjoy these little challenges…

After a little testing, it appears it can be done with a single-cell table and a couple of anchored objects, one for the numbering element, and one for the graphics if desired.

As anchored objects, I put the number in a corner and set up an image to center in the cell. Afterward it was no problem to resize the table. The number stayed attached to the corner and the image re-centered.

      And perhaps a style…

Oh, a little Flash video (it won’t run on some Mac platforms, i.e., iPads)

      Hi,
Thank you for the answers, the trick with the single cell table looks good.
Bob could you tell me a little bit more how you managed to round the corners of the cell.
On your video it looks like there’s only a text frame with anchored objects but I could not anchor objects to text frame
and neither round the corners of a cell.

      Think different … and simple!

2 anchorings! … In fact, you just need the good horse! ;-)

Well, while it may appear to be a text frame, it’s actually a table with a single cell.

For the round corners you need to temporarily think of it as a graphic frame and use the Selection tool and Object > Corner Options…

Next, create and copy your numbering element. Then, switch to the Text tool and put an insertion cursor inside the cell and paste. You should see an anchor icon above the pasted item. Then position with the Anchored Object dialog box. Repeat for the other elements or images.

The Force is strong with Obi-wan, he’s taken it a step further…

Thank you for the help, with the paste trick I now managed to anchor the smaller text frame to the corner of bigger text frame and did the the paste trick also with the graphic frame anchoring it to the center.
Could not round the single cell corners though, I could only round the corners of the text frame living inside the cell, but that was no use. I have to ask Obi-wan how did you manage to fill the frames so nicely with the image so the numbers stay visible, could you describe shortly the workflow ?

      Best Regards,
      Kaimar

I struggled with that today as well and I’m not sure why it was no problem yesterday. Maybe this video will clear things up and maybe Obi-wan had a better approach.

It’s the difference between the text frame within the cell, which doesn’t need to be very large to correctly control the anchored objects, and the cell’s frame.

In the ID file, you will note each “Image-Number” group is anchored!
There’re 3 object styles: one for the first image of the line, one for eventual following ones and the third for the numbering.

The trick is the way the “Image” graphic frame [inline – with/without wrapping] and the “Numbering” text frame [personalized, by reference to the anchoring point] are anchored!! ;-)

      That’s all!

Thank you for the help, I think I got it now.

Hi Obi, I think I must salute you for your wonderful contribution and thinking out of the box. This is really amazing. Thanks for sharing the file with us.

      You’re cool, Masood! ;-)
