From a templating perspective, I’m looking to find the most efficient way to control two styles of paragraph text: (1) text that spans the full-width of it’s container and (2) text which indented by a specific amount.

Ordinarily, I would consider controlling this with a grid and adjusting the size of the text box but it would be preferable if I’m able to control this from a stylistic perspective giving me maximum control over the entire document. The catch is that I need the style controlling the indentation to be agnostic, carrying no style declarations other than the indentation control.

Is this achievable with a paragraph/character style or is it something that would only be able to be controlled with an object level style or by adjusting the size of the text container?

      Reference image.

Not sure what you mean by “agnostic.” Do you mean a style sheet that only has an indent and nothing else?

From your pic—that’s four style sheets (and one full measure text box/master page).

The “Scope of…” would be one paragraph style with no indent.

The “Contrary to…(with no indent) would be another paragraph style

The “Orange type would be another paragraph style with no indent.

The “Contrary to…” would be another paragraph style with the left indent.

I see no reason to worry about a grid or adjusting the size of the text box, or object style.

It looks pretty basic to me. Or is there something else you’re looking for?

From the pic—just separate paragraph styles are needed (some with indents and some without).

      Dwayne,

Thanks, you’re right. The style problem I’m trying to adjust is the indentation of the second body copy paragraph. The first one is the basic paragraph style while the second has a local override to account for the increased left margin.

I was hoping to create a style that would simple adjust the indentation and nothing else, similar to applying a character style to augment aspects of a paragraph style. Maybe I am over-styling or attempting to as you mentioned. The reason I’m thinking more along a new style that’s similar to the function of a character style is that it would allow me to apply the indentation while not adjusting the global formatting of, say, a basic or body paragraph style.

You could make one paragraph style “based on” another. I typically make a “body” style and then a “first paragraph after heading body” style (which is based on body, but has no first line indent)
