Hi ! For the need of a project, I need to have the same space between words.

I’ve put the same number at word spacing (100), letter spacing (-10), glyph scaling (100)
but i don’t have the same space everywhere. Is there a way to improve this ?

I’m working on a justify text that allows no hyphenation
so maybe there won’t be a way to have the same space between words.

Maybe with flush spaces ? But it seems it only works for sentences, not a full book.

      Thanks ! :-)

Your Justification settings are way too strict! InDesign needs at least ONE of those three items to be variable to justify text: either word spacing or letter spacing or glyph scaling (where that last one would be “yuck”).

In your case, you should indeed set only Word Spacing to the same values. It is likely that your contradicting settings make InDesign go ‘shrug’ and just ignores what you tell it.

What’s weird is that when I apply those settings from David Blatner (https://creativepro.com/adjust-word-spacing-in-paragraph-styles.php), it works fine but it takes a lot of place. As soon as I reduce the letter spacing (to save space), the word spacing is not more homogeneous.

Anyway I use David Blatner’s settings on pages where I have a lot of space
and other setting (letter spacing -10 -5 -2) where i have less space.

      Thanks for your help !

That article you reference is more for setting a particular spacing… not the “best” spacing. See this article for more “real world” suggestions:

But it is kind of crazy to try to make justified text where you do not allow any word spacing or hyphenation. The text will look horrible.

Thanks for answering David. I’m not looking for the “best” spacing :-)
Actually I’m really looking for something horrible :-)

More seriously, I’m working on a arabic text for people that are not used to read arabic (beginners).
So we need to have space between words (same space is more beautiful and more readable).

With your settings and Theunis de Jong’s tips, I think I have what I was looking for XD

      Thanks !

LOL. Well, okay. But again, if you can, I suggest not doing justified text. Better would be left-aligned text. That will work much better with the same amount of space between each word.

^^That’s true. And, many characters have a “shoulder” on them, which can give slightly more space.

Oh no we’re going to do as horrible as we can so we will do justified text :-)

Im Joking, we have to do justified text but in arabic with the “kashidas”, it’s gives something very nice and mostly very readable !

Best option is to set your word spacing to the same values. Indesign needs atleast one of those three items to justify the text.
