      Hi.

I work with some other languages than english, and in some stories I have english expressions that need to be in italic (or another style). I know it will sound a little impossible, but is there a way to use GREP and identify all words that need to be in italic? Wait, before saying no: my text styles are in other languages, so english words appears with those red underline due the spelling tool. So MAYBE it’s possible to do something like: “if word is not in the dictionary, make it italic”. :)

      Any idea? :)

      Thanks,
      Luiz

If the non-English language uses the same alphabet as English, I can think of one potential difficulty with the dictionary approach: words which are in fact English, but are spelled the same way as a non-English word.
      Common examples:
“of” in English is also a Dutch word meaning “or”,
“in” is a word in a number of European languages including English…

Sorry, I haven’t got any constructive solutions other than the Mk1 eyeball.

      Chris.

As Chris wrote above, I don’t think there is any way to do this… unless the language uses non-roman characters: https://creativepro.com/search-for-foreign-language-characters-in-text.php

Thanks, Chris and David. I really don’t see a way too. I read the documentation about scripts and didn’t find any way to “capture” the “wrong” words. In my case I only work with latin languages, so I will still do it manually.

My idea is always make my files the most automatic as possible to avoid forgetting something when in a hurry closing files overnight. This thing would help but it’s not essential. Maybe soon I’ll find a way and if so, I will share here.

      Thanks a lot.

One final thought on streamlining the process for that kind of semi-repetitive task that can’t be automated: don’t forget keyboard shortcuts can be assigned to styles, making it a little quicker than using the mouse to assign the style every time.

Thanks, Chris but I’m on a MacBook so I don’t have side numpad to make shortcuts. :( I miss my desktop sometimes. :)

Hi Luiz – when I used a MacBook, I bought a separate keyboard specifically so that I could use the shortcuts. It paid for itself in terms of the time I saved.
You can also buy just the numpad as a separate accessory.

      Good luck,
      Chris.

I had a keyboard, but that small one without the numpad. Hahahaha. But you’re right: I’ll buy a regular one. Will be useful and my “j” key is growing a small crack, so will be good to give my keyboard a little break.

Thanks again! Have a great weekend!
