Oh boy, do I feel like a dunce! It was there all along, right next door in the in the Scale X, Scale Y Percentage fields! I was looking in the wrong place, at W and H. What threw me, I think, is that my eye is trained to see numbers changing on the fly as I resize something back and forth. Apparently that doesn’t happen when dragging a corner of the image.

That said, I seemed to remember there was a keyboard shortcut or some specific way to temporarily stop the Scale X/Y percentages from snapping back to 100% when resizing the actual frame containing the object — this with auto-fit on and holding down Command/Control key.
