Place Command in InDesign CS6

I am having trouble placing rtf files with the Place command.

In the basic course on Lynda.com, the instructor clearly says that you can place a “fully formatted” rtf file with the Place command.

I have all my Masters made. When I Place a “fully formatted” rtf file into a Master, it is no longer “fully formatted.” All words in Bold or in Italics are now in the default text.

So I have two questions. How do I get the Place command to place my document “fully formatted” into a Master, and stay that way? What else should I beware of with the Place command?

If anyone can guide me to a lesson on Lynda.com or anywhere else that deals with this, I would really like to know about it.

I am using Window 7. My rtf files were composed in the latest version of Open Office.

Many thanks for any help with this.

In my experience, placing Word files and the like into InDesign messes up the formatting. To have better control it’s a good idea to select ‘Show Import Options’ when placing the file, and in the dialog box that pops up select any options that you need as well as optional style-mapping.

Though, even with this, things could still get messed up. There a lot of excellent articles and posts on the site that deal with issue. Just do a search.

P.S. Why do you place the text in the master?…
