Text flow issue – lots of white space at the bottom of the page

I’m working on a title I haven’t worked on before (previously set in Word, hence the TNR… yes, I know…) and coming up against an issue I haven’t had before. Every now and then I get a load of white space at the bottom of a page, as if there is a page break inserted, or a really long footnote which is set to not split. Here’s a screenshot:

There is definitely no page break, and no other random non-printing characters. Keep OPtions are all turned off. Footnotes are set to split. Here is a screenshot of how it looks if I make the text frame big enough for it to reflow:

As you see, the footnotes happily split, and there is no long URL or anything causing problems. I just can’t figure it out! There is nothing odd in the Word file either. Any ideas??

And here I’m getting the problem without any footnotes involved. Why on earth won’t that first line of the new page (bottom left) go on the bottom of the previous page (top right)?

Hmm, you said Keep Options are off.

Any chance that “No Break” is applied to a bunch of text?

Maybe it’s a huge space before on a piece of text? Or a space after, for that matter?

I tend to agree with its-betty: Possibly a “no break” has been applied to part of the line that was forced over.

@Ari S.: I thought about that also, but the break is in the middle of text, and when the text frame measure is widened the text comes back. That’s why I’m thinking a no break has been applied to a bunch of text.

      Thanks for your replies!

Hmm. Do you mean a no break little blue arrow between two words? Surely I would see those (I definitely have Show Hidden Characters turned on). Or do you mean something else? I’ve also had a look at various paragraphs this is affecting in Story Editor and there’s nothing there.

Here’s another example of it where there are no footnotes or tables or anything to confuse the matter – just an orphan which INDesign is forcing to the right hand page. You can see I’ve even extended the text frame on the left to try to force those few words back, but nothing doing. This is so frustrating!

I meant the “No Break” feature found in the drop down menu on the character panel (or in character and paragraph styles, or in the drop down menu on the control panel).

I don’t think it shows as a hidden character, so it can be hard to see. You can search for it using “Find/Change” (but that will not show you items in overset text).

      Hope this helps.

I see this is an old thread, but it’s the only one I found.
I too have a white space caused by a large footnote.
I have the document footnotes options set to “split footnotes” and it actually does occur on other pages in the document.
I made sure that there is no “no break” anywhere and no non-breaking spaces (^S).
There are no keep options anywhere in the document.
      Here’s a screen shot.
I’d really appreciate any help I can get on this!

I figured out what is happening, but I have no idea why!
On my screen shot the pages are right to left. (I know the Hebrew is incomprehensible to most of you, but the numbers aren’t)
Footnote 14 and 15 on the left hand page are in one sentence. Seems that they insist on remaining together. When I moved 15 to the next paragraph, all was fixed.

Now if anyone can explain why this happens and how I can fix it (I can’t leave the footnote on the next paragraph!) I’d appreciate it!

When I have this problem it is because the style set for the next word/paragraph calls for it to start on the next page.

I double checked, and as I thought, that is not the case here.
      Thanks for trying.
