PDF failed to export to google drive

I have a workflow where after a data merge, I have a reasonably small file with 1-6 pages, 11×17 with a dozen 300 ppi graphics on each page (all the same graphic that reside on a master page) and some text. I export this to a google drive directory that is synced (much like dropbox where it is a folder on my hard drive). This has worked for me for several years without a problem.

Lately, whenever I export the pdf to this folder/drive, the export fails. Unfortunately, there is no further information from InDesign as to the nature of the failure. There is nothing wrong with google drive, and it is repeatable. If I save it to my desktop, it works just fine. I don’t seem to have this problem with other files exporting to the same folder.

I am suspecting that there is something about the template file I am using. I have saved the template as an idml and reopened it. Same problem. I could accept that there is a glitch in this template, because I have a very similar template (only fonts change), and it works fine. The failure is only when I save *this* file to *this* drive. Dropbox, OneDrive, JungleDisk, no problem. Any local hard drive, no problem. Google drive – problem. Other files (24-up business cards for instance), no problem.

I am on Windows 10 64-bit with the most recent CC update, plenty of memory (10GB, 50% free), lots of disk space.

I am at a loss. Any ideas?

Did you try to save the PDF as with a new file name?

      Ari,

Curious. Since I am using an indt template, I always have to change the filename when I export it, so I never thought this would be a factor. However, just because you asked, I ran a test. The first attempt to export failed (with a custom named or default Untitled-1 filename), as usual. I then did nothing but export again, and changed the name again. It saved.

Now, help explain: A) Why does this work? B) Why did it not work the first time to the google cloud folder, yet will work to any other drive, cloud or otherwise on the first try? C) Why is it just this indt and not any other, including one virtually identical (created from this template as a starting point, and only the font changed)? FYI, this template was rewritten from scratch last summer to accommodate some changes to the layout. This was the one I used as the basis for the other one mentioned in C) that works fine. The document history of the indt file shows no saves other than the original, so there isn’t much kruft to deal with other than general ID overhead.

I really don’t have any answer to any of your strong questions.

But the reason I asked you to play around with the file name is because I thought that maybe there’s cruft in your Google Drive folder! Maybe there’s a hidden indd, indt, idml or PDF file floating around in that folder that clashes with your file. So I thought maybe if you change the name of the original .indt file and the exported PDF file to a name you never used, maybe that will not clash with the hidden cruft in the folder.

So in this vein, maybe you try something else. Create a new folder within that Google Drive folder and check if it works. If it does, then there probably is cruft in said folder.

      Ari,

Thanks. I will try that, but my file naming convention always includes the date, so there will always be a unique file name. It also doesn’t explain why only this template has the problem. The indt file does not reside on the google drive, but on my local drive. I only use the google drive folder for transferring the pdfs.

To your point, I could also trash that folder and create a new one, but my testing shows that when it fails, it fails on any google drive folder, not just my workflow target folder.

This one really has me baffled.

This seems to be a real mystery. Have you tried to open the original template and saving as a new template with a unique file name and then to open the new template and exporting to PDF from there?

      Ari,

Yes, I did that. I even saved as an idml file and opened that. Same issues. As I said, it has me baffled.
