I am trying to create an InDesign template to use to create mini catalogue/contact sheet with multiple records per page. It is set up and working well with one exception. I need auto page numbering and would have thought this would be straight forward enough.

I have a page number box set up on the master page (Page A of 1) which works fine for static documents but when used with data merge it seems to behave oddly. I am out putting documents up to approximately 6 pages in length and it seems that pages 1-5 with all say ‘Page 1 of 2’ and page 6 will say ‘Page 2 of 2’.

Surely there must be a simple answer to this but I cannot get it to work. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

That is very strange. You’re not inserting the page numbers with data merge or something, right? They’re just regular automatic page numbers and text variables (for the “of 6” part)?

Does it help to save and close the document, and then reopen it? What about export the final document to IDML and open that?

Thanks David. Just automatic page numbering – not contained within the data. [current page number] of [last page number]

It seems I’m unable to save a merged InDesign document as it often crashes so am just linking to csv file, outputting merged PDF, linking to the next csv, outputting next PDF and so on. I have over 100 to do each month so looking to iron out the process.

I will approach this again in the morning with a fresh set of eyes and try your suggestions. Any more ideas please do let me know.

Well if you cannot save your document, I am thinking there is a bigger problem… maybe you need to rebuild your preferences, or figure that out. And maybe if you figure that out, it will solve the weird page numbering problem, too. :-)

I think the crashing my be to do with the size of the linked images. Up to 50 or 60 high res PDFs. Outputs the merged PDF ok and relatively quickly.

Using this version of InDesign day in and day out to produce super high res large format graphics without any other issues.

Hi David. Thanks for your advice. I have cracked it. Turns out the answer is, as you suggested, to save a merged document before out putting the PDF. As I mentioned previously InDesign would crash during the process. After a bit of trial and error I realised that the point it crashed was when I clicked the OK button in the ‘No overset text was generated when merging records’ dialog. Turning off the ‘Generate Overset Text Report with Document Creation’ option seems to have solved this. Not sure if this is a bug but problem solved :-)
