Today, I encounter a very interesting question in my mind. As we all know that we can link/place an InDesign file in a different InDesign file and any change in the Master Document will result in the changes in the linked document.

Similarly, is there any way I can link the page(s) of an InDesign Document within the same InDesign file. Suppose there are four pages in a file, which needs repetition (something like duplicating a spread) and any change in the first four pages should reflect in the repeated pages (lets say in pages 5-8).

I have a document where the first two pages are the actual size pages. These two pages are then repeated on page 3 and 4, approximately 60 percent size of the first two pages. Pages 3 and 4 also contain additional information. So every time there is a change in the first two pages, we have to copy them, paste it on page 3 and 4, resize to 60 percent and done.

Now, what I’m looking for is any trick, script or something I don’t know to tackle such situation.

You cab always place one inDesign document into another within a standard graphic box [instead of an image] A dialogue box will ask which page, if there are multiple pages. That way any changes in the imported documents will be applied throughout. Hope this helps.

Hi Barry, I appreciate your response, but I know this already.

It is not about importing one InDesign file to another. It is about linking the pages of the same indesign file, multiple times in the file itself. I hope you got my point.

      There is only InDesign file.

Ah, I see. If you store the pages you need to change as a separate indd file can you not then insert them wherever needed in the document then make changes outside of it?

Hi Masood, I think it would be worth looking at the Content Collector Tool as I’m pretty sure this can do what you want.

@Barry, I tried that already, but it seems that the InDesign is not as fool as I’m :)

I was working on Testfile1 with four pages.
I created another file Linkfile2 with two pages and placed/linked the first two pages from Testfile1.
I then placed/linked the two pages from Linkfile2 on pages 3 and 4 of the Testfile1.
But when I made some changes to page 1 and 2 in the Testfile1, the InDesign fail to update them on page 3 and 4.

@stuarth, I’ll give it a try, but I doubt Content Collector will not create a link, i.e. it will update itself if the content on page one and two change.

@Stuart, I tried the Content Collector tool with “Create Link” option. The tool works fine if I keep the linked page at original size.
However, if I change the size of the linked page, update it, then the things get messed up.

So, Content Collector is not a good idea to go with. Any other tips, script, plugin etc.
