I hate to break it to you, but you can go from an InDesign epub (reflowable) and upload that epub straight to Amazon KDP. I use the downloadable Kindle Gen to double-check everything before uploading, but I just upload an epub, I don’t bother converting it to mobi – Amazon does it for you now. So it is a straight workflow from InDesign to Kindle.

Screen shot showing the online previewer of my title page – formatting and font is good to go.

Kathryn, congratulations! Looks like a beautiful book. Well a beautiful title page at least. ;-D

I think Kevin said … somewhere in there … that if you have a “simple” ebook, one with few or no pictures, tables, dropcaps, etc., then you can often just use Previewer to convert before uploading. You’re using KindleGen, which Previewer runs automatically. The benefit to Previewer (besides it being drag and drop) is that not only do you get the KindleGen stamp of approval (or list of things to fix), but you also get the ability to do a fairly close proof on what the converted epub will actually look like.

Since you’re running KindleGen already, I’m curious why you wouldn’t just run Previewer?

And when you run KindleGen, if it reports a problem/s, how do you fix them? I’m curious if you go back to ID, tweak, and rexport; or do you open up the epub and edit it directly.

HI Kathryn, thanks for writing. You’re right: some EPUBs uploaded and converted to MOBI by Amazon work out just fine. But I’d rather upload a file that I’ve created instead of relying on someone else to do it; I want to have my hands on a file as long as I can. This way, I can preview what will be for sale before uploading, and not be wondering if something in Amazon’s conversion went wrong. As Anne-Marie said, straightforward, text-mostly books are safer to leave to Amazon to do the converting, while anything with any kind of complicated layout issues can be more problematic.

I’m wondering: if you’re using KindleGen and then going back to (maybe) do some touch-up work, why don’t you supply your own MOBI, since you already have it on hand?

      Kevin.

Now why in the world won’t let let me post my response? Maybe because I combined both replies it’s too long? I’ll try splitting them up.

      Hi Anne-Marie,

:D Somehow I knew I should have posted the other screen shots – I was just running quick and grabbing them off the online previewer under my KDP account, but I’ve got drop caps and everything – here ya go. If anyone wants the specifics of how I have things set up, I’ll do my best to answer. But here are a couple of more pages for you.

      My Acknowledgments page

      Drop caps

Chapter One with chapter subheadings (Place and time – just basic stuff)

This one is a little harder to see but my scene breaks are a Victorian flourish. I used a font instead of an image.

And I have these set up as InDesign templates so I can easily switch from epub to a layout for PDF so I can publish print books on Createspace (I have running headers on that option).

I write/publish both contemporary suspense/paranormal and medieval historicals so I have templates set up with fonts appropriate for the medieval.

Now this did take a lot of work to set up, but honestly Anne-Marie – it’s all your fault! lol!
I’ve gone through your lynda.com courses David, Mike – just about all of them I think – backwards forwards and sideways and went through and set everything up just the way I wanted it. Several different times. ;)

I write the books and have a freelance editor, when she gets done with the copyedit, and I get it back as a Word doc. I accept the edits then pull it into Indesign and go to town.

I must apologize for the confusion. I say Kindle Gen because Kindle Previewer has two options one with Kindle Gen and one without (at least when I downloaded it a long time ago – it automatically updates so I don’t hardly pay attention to that part anymore – they may not offer two files to download. I use the Previewer with Kindle Gen so I just call it that. So yes, I do use the drag and drop functionality.

But I also use the epub checker you recommended in one of your vids – Pagina epub checker. The only thing I have to fix is the font stuff because I’m using a lot of specialized fonts here as you can see, and like I said this is reflowable. Haunted Heart – since it’s a paranormal with ghosts, I purchased (or was that one Google fonts – I can’t remember) a “spooky” font for the drop caps. Normally I just use a basic script like on the chapter titles for the drop cap. So I check everything in the epub checker because I had to tweak the fonts. Now that I have the templates set, that usually goes right the first time. Then I use the Kindle Previewer with Kindle Gen – drag and drop to check the thing in it, and I transfer it to my own Kindle and I view it on Kindle for PC.

As for fixing errors, it depends on what the error is. Before I had my templates figured out in InDesign I’d see the drop caps go funky or whatever. I’d go back to InDesign to get the style set right. Fix the problem from the beginning that way I won’t have to edit code because problem fixed. Ya know what I mean? But I never once did a percentage with the drop caps.

Oh and I’m also formatting for Smashwords too – I’m still working on getting the ID format back into Word (using your rtf templates idea). I can upload an epub to Smashwords, but the other formats they offer won’t generate from that. They only generate from Meatgrinder and a Word doc. That’s a little too much work for me and the epub gets me into iBooks, Barnes & Noble and so forth, so I haven’t tackled that yet.

(I started with just Kindle Gen early 2013 then downloaded the previewer later, and the command line Kindle Gen doesn’t work if you don’t have it as “c:\kindlegen”. Anyway I was using Word to format back then UGH! But I do remember if you’re using the command line of Kindle Gen alone it will give you a log TXT file of errors it found.

I hope this makes more sense. Now my latest challenge has been to get my InDesign templates to work with Scrivener. I just got that program a week ago for my birthday and I know I can produce epubs with it too. But I just busted my buns learning ID, so I’d rather use it to format. lol! So I was able to import the ID templates into Scrivener – most retained formatting – on some Scrivener gave me a VBA error code (it’s complicated), I have yet to do a full compile on it to see how it goes – but I haven’t finished writing the book yet. lol!

So I hope I clarified that for you. Again my apologies for the confusion.

      Cheers,
      Kathryn

      Hi Kevin!

Oh believe me, I hear ya! I write the books and format them. The only other person who gets their paws on my novels other than myself is my freelance editor. She helps me with developmental and then when I finish the novel, she does a line by line copy edit. Unfortunately, she’s using Word, so I haven’t been able to remove that critter from my work flow yet. . . YET. I’m working on it. ;) Now that one of my novels was awarded a stipend by ACX, I have it in audiobook production and the PDF I sent the producer was all InDesign. (The audiobook stuff has been sooo coool!!!!)
And yes, you are very correct in saying text – like what I’m doing in my fiction novels – is a safer to work with. But like I said, I’ve got the drop caps and all the bells and whistles that I can get without going overboard.

I used to upload the mobi Kindle Previewer generated and since I’ve stopped I’ve had much better results. I know, y’all probably think I’m plumb loco. lol! But before when you couldn’t upload an epub to Amazon, that’s exactly what I did, upload the mobi I created in the previewer. I had more problems when I did that.

You’re gonna love this one. I’d then go to Amazon, pay retail for my own novel, download it, and there would be serious problems. *head desk* So why is my preview copy working but the one I purchased like a regular customer isn’t? And I did move my preview copies out of my kindle directory before downloading the one I purchased retail.

Highlander’s Hope is the last novel I uploaded the mobi I created in Previewer. If you read the early reviews you’ll see what happened. I got one star reviews not because the story sucked but because of the file issues. Readers are actually going back and defending me in reviews and comments because their file was fine and they liked the story. lol!

Like I said, I’m not privy to the internal workings of Amazon and KDP but I know when I upload that mobi file, it doesn’t matter how well I’ve proofed that sucker, I’m going to have problems with it. Uploading an epub directly – I have smooth sailing.

I dunno…I just know this has been so much easier for me (now watch I just jinxed myself – lol!)
      Cheers,
      Kath

Thanks for all that info, Kathryn. I’m glad you’re able to establish that successful workflow.

When I’m explaining this material I try to keep to what’s written in guidelines, if they exist. In this case the Kindle Guidelines are pretty detailed.

I do that so I can flesh out and describe what’s in the Guidelines. If I presented methods that are different from what the retailers *say* they want, then I’ll get lots of questions about why I’m not following the guidelines. I’m glad to hear your different results, and hope that readers of the article will be encouraged to try different routes to their final MOBI.

I think we’re all pretty used to seeing items in guidelines while knowing they are not completely supported, or workable, or true at all. That’s why this community is so valuable, and why experimenting and testing are vital.

      Kevin.

        Hi Kevin,

First I’m sorry for the what appears to be a zillion billion different links. I was just trying to demonstrate four different screenshots of drop caps and all that I had on mine like I did with the title page. Then it exploded. lol! I promise there’s only four screenshots and then I added a url to Highlander’s Hope in case you wanted to check the reviews. I was working on editing the Photobucket links when all of a sudden I couldn’t edit any more.

So I’m very sorry for that confusion and that it appears like I was just throwing this stuff at folks. That certainly wasn’t my intention – it was trying to get the forum and Photobucket to cooperate. Forum 1, Kathryn 0.

I mentioned uploading directly to Amazon as an epub because I had talked to some other author friends a few months back and an alarming number had no clue Amazon had enabled epub uploads. So I that’s why I made the original post.

I apologize if I came across the wrong way . Thank you for all of your work for the article, it’s definitely PACKED with a ton of great info and wrangling all of that is not an easy thing to do with Amazon, that’s for sure!

        Cheers,
        Kathryn
