      Hi all

I’m looking for some help! I have an ID doc that has linked InCopy files. The files are called STORY, STORY-H1, STORY-C1 etc. I want to tag the text frame with the same name as the linked filename (minus the extension and without the hyphen as the tag won’t recognise that). Is there any script out there that will do this? My scripting knowledge is pretty limited but I have been able to patch together (very) simple scripts in the past.

Thanks for any help in advance

What do you you mean “tag the text frame”?
      Something like this? https://www.rorohiko.com/wordpress/indesign-downloads/framereporter/

Hi David, thanks for the reply, by tag I mean an XML tag that will show up in the structure pane

Are you planning on flowing XML into your document? And you’re trying to place an InCopy article in a frame? I don’t think it will work that way.

The reverse, I want to export it as XML! The manual process would be-

      Open the doc
Check out the linked InCopy files
Tag each each textframe with the InCopy filename (or do you apply the tag to the InCopy file itself rather than the ID textframe?)
      Export as XML
      Check in everything and close

So the resulting XML will look like (the order doesn’t matter):

      <STORYH1>text</STORYH1>
      <STORY>text</STORY>

      etc etc

      Is that possible?

I’m warning you: InDesign is really not designed to export XML very easily. People have damaged the walls next to them after banging their heads repeatedly trying to do clever XML exporting. If you need an XML workflow, I would strongly suggest partnering with a company who specializes in XML.

That said, no, I don’t think there is any way to automate what you’re looking for, though it could probably be done with a custom script.
