When Indesign crashes, which is quite frequently, it’s losing its preferences (every time), (e.g. custom palettes, default fonts etc) which means having to reset all my custom options.

I first had the problem under Lion with CS6, the problem was solved by wiping and upgrading through the versions. I am now on Yosemeti, and the problem has re-arisen.

How do I restore these preferences or preferably stop Indesign from crashing and losing them in the first place?

      Hi evegate94

I’m intrigued by this, as I haven’t yet had InDesign crash on me.

I happen to be using InDesign CC 2014, running on Yosemite. I’ve had all of the previous versions on ID installed, but never really did any ‘serious’ work on them until recently, and for that I had decided to upgrade to CC 2014.

Perhaps it’s possible that the file(s) you’re working-on when ID crashes have a bit of ‘corruption’ in them. I seem to recall that you can pretty successfully rid the file of corruption if you do a Save As and choose IDML. Then, open that IDML file back into InDesign and save as a new INDD file.

That’s what I would first do, and then see if ID continues to crash using these new files.

Sorry I don’t have much else to offer.

      Yours,

      Allan

The crashes seem to occur when if Indesign is trying to do too much such as importing a large file. I’ve had crashes before but it’s the preferences that are frustrating. It loses print settings, preset page sizes, palette options – it’s like it ends up back at default settings.

I also have frequent crashes, with the same resulting loss of all preferences, and return to OOB condition. I am using Adobe CC 2015. I have have 8 people who work under me, and several, but not all, experience the same crashes — so often, in fact, that a member of my team wrote a script for saving a copy of the preferences and restoring them after a crash.

I’m sad to report that we are all using CC 2017 now, and crashing and losing preferences has not gone away. We work on literally 1,000’s of files, so the idea of “save as” is not a viable option. It’s not unusual to have several crashes a day.

And I’ve done a complete wipe of all Adobe products, trashing all preferences, and reinstalling from scratch. Even had an Adobe tech assist with that.

      Problem is still not solved.
