      Wow! Tearing my hair out.

I have a 300 page book that I’m laying out. The author changed the order of the first section of the document.

I moved the pages around and am trying to rethread (I’m in InDesign CC–latest update). But when I do this I cause ALL sorts of problems. The latest is I click at the outport of one threaded page and click in the next but instead of threading I get a new frame (and WHY is InDesign creating new frames instead of using my Primary Text Frame?). I’ve also tried unthreading following directions from Adobe’s site but can’t seem to do it.

is there perhaps a script where I can unthread the book and rethread it in the order I’ve placed the pages? Or another way. I don’t think this should be so hard.

Oh. I read in this forum something about text wraps and threading, I do have lots of text wraps, I’m not sure why they would affect the threading issue but I thought I’d mention in case.

      Thanks for any help.

I don’t know of an easy fix, but there are two things I would do to help discern what is going on with the order of things now:
I would look at the text in the story editor. You can cut/paste in the story editor to get your text in the proper order.
I would ‘Show Text Threads’, which can be found under View/Extras. Then you can make sure your text frames are in order.

Not exactly what you’re looking for, but hopefully it helps.

Yeah, this is frustrating and it’s kind of tricky. The best way I found is using a script (free) by Rorohiko: https://www.rorohiko.com/wordpress/indesign-downloads/textstitch/. You can easily thread/unthread without causing a havoc. Try it and let us know how it goes.

I’ve found that when you click on the output and then click in the middle of the next text frame it works okay. If you are trying to click in the next text frame’s corner, it will usually create a new text frame. Just click on the output and click right smack in the middle of the next text frame.

Thank you all. So far I haven’t been able to get that script downloaded/installed correctly. It seems the developer hasn’t created a recent enough version (I’ve written to him to check on that but the last version he’s written about is CS5).

I tried following Dwayne’s suggestion and clicking in the middle of the next frame (the one that I WANT to link to) and InDesign pastes a new frame over my current frame no matter where I click. I also tried breaking the thread by clicking on the outport and then clicking when I see a broken link and everything disappears. So so many weird issues with the threading, it would be so nice if I could just drag those threads around.

I also tried Story Editor a while back but I’ll try again. I can’t remember what happened but it wasn’t pretty.

Thanks much! I would love to solve this one.

The script works well with the latest Indesign CC 2014. I think you need to download the APID Tool Assistant First.

Thanks Guz, I do have the APID and it shows up in the software but then I can’t find the script (it’s in the same plugin folder as instructed). But this is good to hear that it does run in the latest software because I was just saving backward and trying to load it to older versions of the software so now I’ll scratch that and keep trying to figure out why I can’t get the plugin/script into CC2014. Back to it!

I keep saying script and it’s actually a plugin. Just follow the instructions carefully. You basically just need to copy the .spln file to the plugin Adobe CC 2014 file. By the way are you on a Mac or PC?

I’m on a Mac. I just did an epic restart (InDesign took over 10 minutes to open) and was hopeful but my APID Tool Assistant is still empty.

Here’s a stupid question.. when one “installs” the plugins (not scripts–got it) is one just opening the zips and moving them to the plugin folder? It seems that’s the only thing I can do. The instructions seem to only go so far on that question. I have read them multiple times and also read the FAQ pages. I admit slowing down and reading directions isn’t always my forte but I’m still not sure what I could be missing. I’d send you screenshots but it looks like I can’t attach them here.

      Thanks!

Update.. I re-watched Anne Marie’s Lynda.com video on the topic of threading and unthreading (love that woman!) and used the sample script to unthread the whole document (saved as new version). Now it is unthreaded. Looked into my “install” question but found there’s no info to do anything but what I’ve been doing. Cleared all preferences just in case that was the problem. Downloaded Jongware script to rethread but select all doesn’t truly select all (Why? I don’t know) so I can’t link things up without doing it a little at a time or possibly dragging across the entire document of 200 (so far) pages. That might work.

I’m glad you are progressing. Yes, Indesign comes with a script to unthread the whole document in one go. I’m a Windows user basically but I do have a Mac. I just installed from scratch the APID Tool Assistant and TextStitch. It took me a few minutes to figure it out. But finally I can see the API app and TextStitch on ID CC 2014. I had to double click on the unloaded files to unzip them. You’ll see the TextStitch.spln with a green icon. Select it, copy and paste it to plugins on ID CC 2014. You need to do this while ID is not running. Then the next time you open the application and you click on API on the top menu Text Stitch should be just below APID ToolAssistant. If needed reboot your Mac.

OK. The good news is that I finally gave up trying to get this program to work on my desktop and decided to load it to my laptop and lo an behold it worked. However, I found I had to separate “story” by story.

The bad news is that there’s no way to select all 200 pages and the associated frames that I can figure out in order to thread. I will have to thread spread by spread. Unless anyone knows any different?

OMG I might die if she tells me to put the pages in a new order after this. And I wouldn’t put it past her.

      Thanks

And! I think we did it. Configure and then begin quick stitch and then click every page to select. And, so far so good.
      thanks again

No problem. I’m working on a second edition of a book where I had to cut some chapters and insert a few more in different places. TextStitch is a lifesaver for this kind of work.
