      Hi everyone,

I have created a 600 page document using .indd. Part way through the project it’s been decided that we’re going to work on it as a small team, and I’d like to convert it to an Indesign Book file, split up into different chapters, so that multiple users can work on the book at the same time.

I can’t seem to find any tips on taking a regular .indd and converting it into a book file. Is it possible? Or do I have to go to my plan B which is copying and pasting each chapter into its own document…?

      Thanks for your help :)

There may be a script to do this, but I don’t know of one. The easiest way to do it is not the most fun, but it works: Save multiple copies of the same (whole) document, then open each one and delete a bunch of pages, then save and then add to a book file.
In other words, to split one 100-page document into two, save two copies of the same file, then in the first one delete pages 51-100 and in the second one delete pages 1-50.
That said, if the book is made of multiple stories that you each want to work on separately, I might recommend using InCopy or WordsFlow or something like that, so that you keep the final document one INDD file, and just split up the editorial outside of InDesign.

Hi Hyppe, there is indeed an script by Peter Kahrel and it is here on indesignsecrets.com, see the article:

      https://creativepro.com/free-script-splits-long-indesign-files.php

      or download it here:

there is also a version for CS5.5, I hope you can search it.

      one more thing to add.

You can use MakeItRun.jsxbin script to make it run in any version of InDesign, see
