Metric type measure

Almost all my editorial page formats are defined in millimeter, how can I change the input? or better yet — how can I create my own measure?
I’m so tired of inapt round-offs for leading and type size where 4 mm writes 11.693 pt, and the metrological inconsistency and GUI in Adobe Software. I mean Illustrator already handles metric type measure, why not InDesign?

When you type 4mm type size in Illustrator, what is it measuring?

You probably know that you can change the rulers (and therefore most of the input fields) to mm by right-clicking the rulers (or, better, the little square where they intersect). However, that won’t change the type and leading inputs, which will stay in points because points have been the standard for typography for a century or more. That said, you could use this script to set the size:

      Hello David,

I’m well aware how the rulers work in Adobe Software. What I find odd is: when I upgraded from CS6 to CC, Illustrator suddenly handles rulers, line and type measure in millimeter. I can finally type, let say I want 4 mm leading, and then the vertical metrics is set to “4 mm” in Illustrator rather than 11.639 pt. This is a very important step in the right direction regarding visual size. Just to be able to use the same metrological system through out the entire document makes the software more pragmatic.

Now that I’m ”spoiled” with Illustrator I want all Adobe software to do the same, it would make it a lot easier for me, and every European user for that matter.

I tried the script you linked to and it looks good, the only problem I see is that it measures the face rather than the font dimension, some typefaces have overshooting serifs, Adobe Garamond for one.

Believe me, I love the point system, if I could decide I would want the Metric system to be duodecimal instead of decimal.

Thank you, David, for the swift respond.

      Cheers,
      Kristian

Kristian, I see your point. I agree that it would be nice to have the same features from Illustrator. You might consider adding this as a wish-list item here:
