Print Bank Checks from InDesign

I have wasted hours with crappy check printing software. I used to have an old version of VersaCheck from the 90’s that worked really good, but didn’t work on any computer newer than XP. The new VersaCheck wants to “Help” me too much, and has layers and layers of extra security that I don’t want and makes me either always buy checks and toner from VersaCheck or pay a fee for using other manufacturers supplies. Nope, not doing that. I have tried several others but they either fall into the too much or so simple that I have ugly checks.

I have been doing backgrounds logos and watermarks from InDesign on blank white check paper, then running it with the other software for the MICR line.

Got to thinking about it tonight after wasting 3 hours with another crappy trial software… “Why not use Data Merge and print the entire thing from InDesign?”

      Any thoughts?

When you say you want to print checks, is this checks which are connected with your accounting software or are you going to be manually entering each amount / recipient etc. individually?

Just asking because a lot of accounts packages have a section for doing this – I know mine has, I use two accounting programs MYOB & Moneydance and they both offer the facility to print either blank checks onto pre-formatted paper or they can accept a PDF background and print the whole thing either singly or in sheet form.

Just for hand filled out checks. We have several different companies and we like to use several different custom backgrounds and have been printing our own checks for at least a decade. I just very much dislike all the new software I have looked at. There is no great secret to the check format. I keep thinking about doing it in ID.
