I will be setting up a four-page (8.5×11) newsletter in InDesign, exporting it to PDF, and sending the PDF to a client who will print it out on their home/office printer (on 11×17 paper). I’m trying to figure out whether I should set it up (1) as 8.5×11 pages with facing pages turned on, or (2) as 11×17 pages. Option 1 would work if they sent it to a commercial printer, or if they printed it on their own low-end printer from the InDesign file using Print Booklet. Option 2 would work if they were always and forever going to print from PDF on their little in-house printer. Is there an Option 3, in which I can set up the “correctly” formatted 8.5×11 pages but generate a PDF that looks like the Print Booklet hard-copy version (ie, with pages 1 and 4 next to each other)? If there IS an Option 3, it would give us more flexibility going forward. I kind of suspect there isn’t, but thought I would run it by you guys before I give up. Thank you!

ang: You can Print Booklet to PS in your Print dialog box, then use Distiller (or Acrobat) to create your PDF from that PS.

We do that for 40+ page magazines – works great.

Set up your ID file as normal, then Print Booklet.

      Best – sno

This is what I do: Export InDesign file to PDF as single pages.

(Sometimes) Set Properties for the PDF in Acrobat to show facing pages with a cover page (if the client will want to review spreads on screen).

Printing: Have client use the Print Booklet feature in Acrobat or Acrobat Reader. (I take a screen shot of the Acrobat Print dialog showing the correct set up and send that to the client as a “How to” file.)

Also remember that if you turn on the Spreads checkbox in the Print dialog box (or export PDF dialog box) then you will get both left and right pages on one page, so it is easy to proof like that.

Well I got the interior pages but the outside, i.e. front and back page were isolated. In my case 2 x A5 pages , not combined on a single landscape A4

Phil, the front and back page need to be facing pages. When you set up your document it must start with an even number. You adjust from there. This video will show what I mean. I left the balance as reader spreads, but you may want to create printer spreads to print from a laser printer. https://screencast.com/t/j5FMwNlMov
