Make newly added pages appear right next to current page on spread by default?

If I have a single page document and I want to add a page, by default it appears on my spread
below and to the left of my current page.

I understand this is for book-type layouts, but I’m just doing simple 2 page spreads.
I want the 2nd page to appear directly to the right of the current page.
What’s annoying is, I can’t just drag it there in the pages panel, until I uncheck “allow selected pages to shuffle”.
It’s counterintuitive, I must “disallow” something to gain flexibility and “allow” my page to go where I want?

Anyway, does anyone know how to change this default behavior, so clicking add page immediately results in a page
to the right of my current page?

No luck? Hope my question makes sense.
What I ended up doing is binding a keyboard shortcut to that “Allow Document Pages to Shuffle”.
Whenever I consider adding a page, I immediately hit that keyboard shortcut so the new page
appears where I want, directly to the right of the existing page.

A minor annoyance but thank you Adobe for the flexible keyboard shortcuts, it solves many problems.

Don’t know if you still need an answer to this. I wrestled with this problem for a long time before I discovered the ‘allow pages to shuffle’ toggle like you found.

To save you having to make any keyboard shortcuts – if a setting is required as the default for you – all you do is make the selection BEFORE you open your first page – that way every page opened from then on will be placed right next to the previous one.

So, before any document is opened, go to the wee drop-down menu in the page tab, un-tick the option to shuffle the pages, open a new document and then add a page. Not only will it place the page where you want it, but the next time you open InDesign – that option will not be ticked.

This works the same for any options (as far as I’m aware)
