      Hi all,

I'd like to place line numbering in a long-ish prose passage. I was hoping to do it with the auto-numbering feature in indesign rather than with a script so that I can reference the line numbers later. Is there any way to accomplish this? I'd rather not have to manually insert line breaks, as that would be inflexible and time consuming.

      Thanks!

That was actually an old post of mine. The solution I found only works for poetry. With prose, because there are no line breaks, there are only line numbers for paragraphs. Is there any way to tell indeisgn to put a number there without insert a line break?

Oh, that's funny. I didn't look to see who had written it! :)

Here's an article about that: https://creativepro.com/num…..f-text.php

Hm, it doesn't seem as if it'll do exactly what I need it to. Is there any way to accomplish this using inCopy? I've never used it before but could it be helpful here?

      Nope.

What is it about the blog post solution (numbering in a separate frame) that doesn't work for you?

Well I'd like to be able to reference the line numbers, and have those references change so that if I reformat the text or add new lines the references will change accordingly. With the line numbers in a separate frame they would be unrelated to the content, right?

That's right. I don't think there's going to be anything inside ID that can do what you need. Maybe a custom script.

Alright, thank you for your help (both on these forums and in the lynda videos)!

Is there any way to trick indesign into thinking that there is a line break at the end of a line (without it actually breaking)? Like some non-breaking return?

Does inserting U+2029 PARAGRAPH SEPARATOR help?

Place a dummy character where you want it to occur, Text search for it, and replace it with <2029>.

I don't know how to insert unicode characters in indesign. Is this something I need a script for?
