Paragraph Style Kerning Setting Ignored. Why?

I'm a zealous styler. My text paragraph style kerning is set to Metrics, but when applied to the text in a long document it is behaving as if kerning is set to None. I discovered this after turning on the “Preferences/Composition/Custom Kerning and Tracking” which highlights most all my text in blue.

I have ruled out any overrides or character styles causing this.

I have ruled out any GREP settings that are applied to the paragraph style.

When I edit the paragraph style kerning to None there is no change in actual kerning on the page; when I change the kerning back to Metrics the blue indicators disappear and the text wraps to it's now-correct metric kerned glory.

The kerning of None is not so hot looking, and now I know why I haven't been too terribly excited about recent results.

We're only 2,000 pages into a 1,800 page illustrated book, so let's just say this is disconcerting, as reflow is likely.

      • Why does InDesign seem to ignore my paragraph style settings for kerning?

After 'correcting' the paragraph style from “Metrics” to “Metrics” in my master document, I CAN synchronize this through my book to resolve the issue (though text wraps will require inspection on all.)
