Spaces in Filenames

      Hello All,

I'm just wondering how people get around the 'no spaces allowed in filenames' issue when trying to validate an EPUB exported from ID.

Googling the problem, it seems there are scripts available to batch rename files, but I'm worried about breaking links either between the original ID file and the images (if I batch rename before export) or the HTML files and the images (if I batch rename after export).

How do I get around this without having to fix links after renaming? I'm working on books potentially containing hundreds of images.

Apparently some previous versions of ID replaced spaces with %20 on export. This would be ideal but alas I'm using CS6. Perhaps there's an Adobe fix out there somewhere?! Here's hoping!!

      Thanks for your time.

I'm pretty sure that the spaces in filenames problem is a warning, not an error. Meaning it's valid, with warnings.

Can you post some of the warnings you're getting?

InDesign does put in the placeholder %20 in place of spaces when necessary. Or with style names, it closes them up with hyphens.

Make sure you're using ID CS6.01 (the patch update) which fixed a couple filenaming issues with EPUBs.

I use a Tomaxxi script called LinkRename to rename image filenames right in InDesign, though I usually just bother when the filename has illegal characters like apostrophes and accents. The script automatically renames the original linked files too, so there are no worries about broken links. (Unless you've used those images elsewhere in another layout … if so choose Copy Links To from the Links panel menu before running the script). The script is here: https://tomaxxi.com/downloads/

      Anne-Marie,

Thanks (again) for your reply. I am using CS6 8.0.1 but I have a niggling feeling that the update may not have installed correctly at the time. Do you know of a way I can check, or re-install the update?

The validation notes on this one are indeed Warnings and not errors. I didn't realise the file would be still valid. I am new to all of this and just assumed I needed a clean sheet when validating. That's good news. Here is an example of one of the errors anyway:

WARNING: /Users/Mark/Desktop/LEM-EPUB-TEST-Throwing-121206.epub/OEBPS/image/9781408139554_p072 new_fmt.jpeg: Filename contains spaces. Consider changing filename such that URI escaping is not necessary

Thanks for the link to the Tomaxxi script. I shall Google how to load / run such scripts from InDesign (like I said – I'm a newbie!) and make use of it. A clean sheet would be much more pleasing!

I do have other validation errors that I need to sort but I'll look into these before posting seperate queries.

      Many thanks for your time.

Cari Janssen wrote a nice blog post last year about installing and using this script for an epub project:

Also, I cover installing scripts for epub production, and using them (this Tomaxxi one and many more) in my lynda.com video tutorial:

InDesign CS6 to EPUB, Kindle, and iPad:

Cari's blog post is a good one. And in one of the comments I found a link to a similar script that can batch rename (and relink) all of the images in a document in one hit! See here. I've just run it and it's worked a treat.

I am aware of your Lynda.com courses and will be taking the one you mention above, as well as your Fixed Layout EPUB course next week. I've been studying eBook production (from scratch!) for the last couple of months now and the learning curve has been STEEP! I seem to be getting down to the business end of things now so input from experienced folk such as yourself is invaluable.

      Thanks again Anne-Marie!
