      Hey everyone!

I have a question about EPS files and how to import them into InDesign. Here's a short background story and the problem that I'm having:

I'm working on a pretty small calendar (24pages) but filled with loads of text paragraphs and images. My boss wanted me to add all kinds of shiny effects on the text, so I chose to work with Photoshop (as it provides more effects and an easier way to apply them on the text). I made all 24 pages in Photoshop, saved them as TIFF and transfered them to InDesign. I've done one design like that in the past for press printing, and everythign was fine.

Now I get a call from the press company, and they complain that my design is rasterised, and they can't 'pull out' the text and start printing it. Now I know what I've done wrong, choosing to create all the pages in photoshop. Lesson learned.

But now I need a way to seperate the text and background and transfer them to InDesign.

The person that I spoke to suggested me to save the background and the text in seperate files. She also suggested to export my text with transparent background to EPS file, and then place it on top of the background image in InDesign. In that way they will be able to 'pull out' the text image from the background.

I thought this will be easy. I was wrong. Whatever I do, the EPS file appears to have a white background colour when I place it in InDesign. Even when I export my design to PDF, the white color remains.

I tried to save the text both in Pohotoshop and Illustrator, and I played around with the options. Nothing seemed to work and it makes me wonder, what am I doing wrong?

I also tried to place both PSD and AI files directly into InDesign. And it kinda worked, there was no white background image, but I'm not sure if they will be able to pull out the text image?

Is there a way to save my text as a vector image?

I'm just so lost, not knowing how to fix all the mess that I got myself into.

Any kind of tips would be greatly apreciated.

Why does the printer want to separate the text from the image? Why can't they print it as a four color job? Save the photoshop file as a pdf and send that over. I would suggest a pdf/x4 settings because of the effects that are put into it.

Placing EPS files isn't needed anymore. Indesign supports AI and PSd so, exporting files to eps is a step to omitted.

Your “shiny effects” on the text are raster (pixel-based) effects. Exporting them to a vector-based format like EPS will not make the pixels into vector lines. Moreover, EPS is dead—or almost.

Back to your problem: I would do gert's suggestion and save your photoshop file as a pdf and send it to print. Or better yet, go to another printer.
