GREP search string to look for "incomplete" italics?

I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to search with GREP to find instances where a word is italicized, but the punctuation following it is not. I have a character style for italics. Example:

“What?” <–so the “What portion is in italics with the character style applied, but the ?” is not. I'd like to be able to search a document (novel length) for anytime that the character style is applied but followed by a non-white space character that does NOT have it applied. Because in my house style for these books, the punctiation following a word should use the same formatting as the word itself. The problem typically arises with words followed by either a ! or ? as these are the most obvious discrepancies. Visually, it's harder to tell if a closing quote is italicized or not.

I'm not proficient enough in GREP to figure this out, or to know for sure if it is possible. Any one?

You cannot search for mixed attributes using GREP. The inverse might work, though: search for punctuation in Regular with 'nothing' (i.e., not-Regular) before it.

      Try this: search for

      (?<!.)[[:punct:]]

with “Regular” in the Find Format style field.
