Huh? My Indesign CS5, version 7.0, keeps crashing when I try to do anything

I turned my CS5 book into CS4 capability, sent it to someone who helped me with the Index. She sent it back, and it went right into my CS5. But anytime I try to do a Page Break, or a delete, or anything…BAM, it crashes.

I looked at Adobe for updates, and see them for 7.0.1 through .5. I just have 7.0, so I'm assuming none of these would work?

What else can I do to stop these crashes?

You definitely want to make sure you have the latest version of InDesign. Choose Help > Updates, and get 7.0.5, or whatever it offers.

Hi David. Just checked–they are up-to-date. Three things:

1. Would this problem have anything to do with the fact that this long document was first done by me in CS5, then was worked on with a CS4, then sent back to me??
2. Here's something odd–is there a clue here: I tried to export it into an IDML file, and as it's loading, and the bar is going to the right, it stops COLD about 1/4″ from the completing, and it stops at a Graph I have in the back part of the book. Could that be it? If so, what do I do?
3. I looked up how to read a crash report. They state that Line 0 should tell me something. Here it is plus those underneath. Any clues??

It could be the graphic… are you saying that you cannot open that IDML file then succesfully export a new IDML file? That would indicate that there is some significant corruption somewhere. I don't know why it would do that.

And here's a potential 4th clue?? I have four items I was changing to bulleted items. I got the bullet on the first three, but the 4th one always causes a crash. WHAT is that about??

The reason I was exporting the file to myself as an IDML file is because I read on the net that it might work to then use the same IDML back into your Indesign to avoid crashing. SO, it sounds like that could be clue as why? I also just posted above that I have four items that I was changing to bulleted items, and I was able to do the first three, but ALWAYS crash if I try to bullet the fourth one.

David, I've been reading the above link, but I can't find information on how to backup a file. Can you help me with that?

(By the way, to clarify–I CAN open the Indesign File sent back to me from a CS4. I just can't work on it without it crashing, and I am unable to take the file and make it an IDML file without it stopping on a particular graph.)

Backing up the file usually just means making a copy to another folder, or doing a File > Save a Copy.

I don't know what could have gone wrong with your file, but it sounds like something is very bad.

Can you export the file as IDML, then open that new IDML file back in InDesign?

No, that's another problem! When I try to export the file as IDML, the blue line goes to the right and stops cold about a 1/4″ from the far right….at Graph 50. It won't finish past Graph 50. Help.

And by the way, the gal with the CS4 who worked on this long document—she ONLY did the Index for me. She supposedly didn't touch a thing before that. Could this have anything to do with the Index by chance…but why would it stop a Graph 50, which is 46 pages before the Index in this 385 page book??

I would make a copy of the file, then delete half the pages and try to export the IDML. Then delete the other half and export. Or find what image or text frame is getting in the way of a successful export. Keep deleting things (maybe just image at a time) until you figure it out. Sounds horrible! InDesign doesn't usually do this.

Ok, I'll go do it now and report back. Guess what? The gal with the CS4 who helped with the Index—SHE sent me the IDML file…and it did the exact same thing—stopped cold at Graph 50.

I have done Window > Utilities > Scripts….then Application > Samples….then got to Java Script and SplitStory.jsx…but I'm lost on how to select half of the book.

Hmm. It appears that what I posted last night is now gone.

Nothing is working and the crashing is still occuring badly. When I tried to do the Split Story, it caused Indesign to crash.

Badly need help on this frustrating problem. I'm just a few steps away from being able to send the book to the printer, but can't do several corrections because of this.

Any ideas appreciated.

Here are facts in all this, and hoping someone can help me come up with an idea as to why it's crashing and what to do:

1) Sent my CS5 to someone in the IDML because she has CS4. She did the Index for me, and sent back to me. Crashing starts. Index issue??? If so, what??

2) Crashing occurs when I'm trying to make changes in text: when I press delete at the top of the page (to bring back page which pushed over to next page), when I try to delete a section, changing the font of a heading, doing the 4th bullet of four items (first three bullets were fine; fourth one crashes me), doing a full return to add a space (very common reason for crashing), etc.

3) I have been unable to make another CDML–it stops about 45 pages from the end on “Graph 50”. I looked at my errors–found a huge body in inset on the page right about Graph 50 that I didn't need. Got rid of the inset. Could the crashing be from something in Graph 50 alone?

4) Trying to do Split Story crashes Indesign

5) Crash report–does it have something to do with the “library”???

Have you:

• Tried deleting all the images in the document, then doing an IDML export?
• Tried deleting all the index entries in the document: https://creativepro.com/how…..ntries.php and then trying the IDML trick?
• If both of those don't work, then try deleting all the text in the main story and doing the IDML. (In other words, keep trying to remove stuff until the IDML works. When it works, then, in theory, you will have found the corrupted culprit.)

Keep a clean backup, of course, so you can go back to it if you need to.

I had only thought of removing Graph 50, so perhaps I'll do just that and see, then all of them see. Excellent idea. But I'm an Indesign neophyte. How exactly do I remove them and keep them somewhere to reuse?? Same question if I have to remove all the Index?

Just keep a backup… for example, open the document and choose “Save As” and change the name to “MyFile_ImMessingThisOneUp” then make your changes. Later, you can delete this whole file and go back to the original one.

I am sad to report that deleting the final graph didn't stop the problem with creating an IDML file. I also started deleting more pages of the graphs–same. And it's all causing my Indesign to crash. I'll have to keep going with deleting and see what happens.

Something I don't understand. I have removed all the pages with graphs–50 graphs in all which were on about 25 pages. But when I export as an IDML file, and attempt to open it, it still goes through the 50 figures…stops at the 50th….yet not only were the graphs removed, so were the pages!!

UPDATE: well, well, well. I just removed the INDEX that someone created for me, and I was able to upload the IDML file!!! No more crashing.

So what do I do? I paid someone to do this Index and clearly, it's the reason for the crashing.

Hard to know, but I would try:

• Selecting the text in the index, then using File > Export to export it as an InDesign Tagged Text file, then deleting the index, then trying to import the text again…
• If that doesn't work, then try importing the index tagged text file into a new document
• If that doesn't work, try the whole thing again but exporting as an RTF file isntead of tagged text

It does sound as though something is icky in that index!

One other thing: You're not using a new 2012 mac, are you? There were lots of crashing problems earlier this year when the new macs came out.

Well, I was forced to figure this out myself with other help. And guess what was causing the crashing?? The Index! That became clear when I removed it in the Copy I made, and no crashing. So I turned the Index into Word, removed the formatting, put it back into Indesign, reformatted the index list of words, and voila. Thanks everyone. :) :)
