      Hi,

I'm self taught on InDesign, and am still using an old version (2.02!), but it does everything I need to create a few brochures etc.

I just generate a PDF (at version 5.0) and all is well.

Anyway, I stopped using it for a whlie, but somebody else in my workplace continued on, but they were not quite up to speed on it.

I am now picking it up again and things were a little “messy”

I fixed everything up and got back to normal.

But now, when I print the PDF, it kills the printer!!!

In work we have laser printers, and the screen just says “900 Service RIP Software” and I have to call the IT helpdesk to reset it.

I know the info here is vague, but I'm hoping that somebody will have come across something that will point me in the right direction on how to fix this.

I have 7 docs, and 2 of them have killed 2 printers. I can't go on testing the other docs or I will be killed myself….

      HELP!

      Thanks

Not sure what you mean by “print the pdf.” What program are you printing from? Are you using file > export to make your pdf and then printing from Acrobat?

      Hi,

Yes, in InDesign I export to PDF.

Then from an Adobe Acrobat Reader, I File->Print to the printer.

I understand, from internet sleuthing, that lots of printers can have problems printing some PDFs, in fact a printer guy here just said 2 other printers had the same problem recently, but I need to know if there is something I can change in the way I create the PDF in InDesign to avoid this issue, or am I at the mercy of printer drivers and printer hardware issues.

      Thanks.

Well, I would guess that it is Acrobat, not InDesign. Seems unlikely that something you're doing in InDesign would affect how Acrobat prints. I would check your print dialog box settings, and especially your printer driver settings.

I think this is a printer problem. Can the printer handle complex pdf files correctly? I mean, has it a build in rip, or is it an emulation? Rip software error, sometimes means that the driver is too old, or the pdf too new. Are you saving as 1.3 pdf or later? Make sure the transparancy is flattened, this causes lots of problems with old rip software.

Another possibility comes to mind: It's possible, too, that this is from the fonts. You might try exporting as different flavors of PDF (pdfx/1a, x/3, etc) until you find one that works. Also, maybe set the font subsetting to zero percent instead of 100%.

      Hi,

Thanks for the replies. Yes there are 2 transparant objects and I am printing to 1.5. I will try flattening and printing to 1.4

      Thanks.

      Hi,

Just to update… I removed the transparency from some graphics and printed to 1.4 and it works.

      Thanks.
