I am doing a translation of my book. The translator translated all the words that were already in my English version Index…but without the pages numbers, since those would change when I placed everything into my Indesign CS5.

I've watched Davids video and the guy who did videos on longer documents, and I just can't figure out how to put pages numbers with the already-provided words. i.e. I don't need to “create an Index” as far as finding the right words. I already have the right words, translated. I can't figure how to simply put page numbers with the provided translated words.

      Any ideas?

P.S. A second problem: I didn't set up columns first. When I try to make them into columns, all it does is push the Index single column words forward one page, and a new blank page of two columns appears without the words. Am I unable to turn each single column page into two columns?

D, once I used a script for that purpose, this is the link,

      https://www.kahrel.plus.com/ind…..dlist.html

Just save the script in the right spot, and give it a try. I hope it still works in cs5.

Column: Just start over again, make the columns first, on the master page so that you don't have to do it at each page, then place the file again.

Thank you—I had a feeling I'd need to start all over again and make the columns. lol. And I'll check out your link.

You might also try the the IndexMatic script from indiscripts, or the indexing features in Sonar from Virginia Systems.

I did a video about the older free version of indexmatic at lynda.com at this link.

3rd UPDATE about trying to place translated Index words…

I initially wrote that about struggling to accurately place the translated Index words into the pages with columns I created.

      1. Word version of the translated Index words would not place.
      2. I finally got the PDF version to place…but it was failure. It only placed one left column of the A words, plus about 12 of them below the bottom line….and no red plus mark to thread anything.
      3. I then got the RTF to place…but some of the words just went right over the left column into the middle space…and the red plus mark is on the far right side of the right column!

Totally confused and stuck. How do I get all the translated Index words in, and fill all columns??

D, without having seen the rtf or word file, it seems as if a lot of “garbage” has come with the files. Try to see if you cannot find “tabs, spaces, etc.” and delete them as much as needed and then try again.

Thanks. As I kept working on it, I was able to start the Index column threading on the fourth page, but have never figured out what that isn't occuring on the first three pages.
