I'm hitting a wall on this. I've read Adobe's website. I've read comments posted to me. And I've searched Lynda.com. Either I find nothing, or most common, steps to be taken are not clear at all. They are given as if I'm a expert in Indesign terminology or methods. Did you do a video explaining how to add a different header for each Chapter??

D, create a master page for each chapter of your book. Set the headers and assign that master page to the pages in that particular chapter. (Page panel – apply master to pages).

D, just saw the other post too late. My solution is, I think, the most simple way to do it (it may even be a pre-indesign solution, but it works all the time). Jongware is right saying that using other methods (variable text) are better. Since you're a “novice”, just try the different master pages, it's a good start and will save you time for the moment.

In my experience, it takes about 3 months before one masters about 5 % of Indesing's capabilities. The online help gets sometimes confusing for you, mainly because you have to master everything at the same time which is nearly impossible. Sometimes you want to run befor you can walk, so take your time, learn from the errors made, and look for better solutions for some problems your next book.

I also talked about the Section Marker technique in my CS4 beyond the basics title.

But I agree that in general, making paragraph style variables is a better option. Mike Rankin talks about that in his Long Documents title at LDC.

Thanks everyone. I FINALLY figured it out by watching a gal's video https://www.adobe.com/designcen…..id=vid0078, which ended up being the lightbulb for me. I also had to make some educated guesses in areas that weren't clear to me.

i.e. in this gal's video, she was making headers based on a “style” she chose in Text Variables. Lightbulb!! I want back to my Text Variable, changed Character Style to Paragraph Style, and then choose my specific “Chapter Titles” style. I went back to the Master Page and selected the right side pages, and “Inserted” the Text Variable I created (Type > Text Variables > Insert)…and voila, all the headers appeared based on the Chapter Titles. I was both amazed and wanted to fall flat on the floor in shock and fear of “did I REALLY understand what I just achieved??” lol.

I did notice one problem: two of my chapters have a title that incorporates a colon in the middle. And the Variable put the SECOND HALF of the title as a header. That did not work. lol. So I've been manually changing those two chapter headers.

BOY THIS HAS ALL BEEN HARD. But, other than making sure the page numbers are correct in the Table of Contents, I'm happy to state that I've only got the Index left to do. Shudder shudder.

Boy I can believe THAT!! lol. I so wish I could find a “class” near me so I don't have to go through such misery with teaching myself all this. But as I see it, if I can just “master” formatting these books, then I'll feel more relaxed to learn that other 95%.

By the way, my next book is waiting in the wings to be formatted. I have to go straight from this one to the next one! Long story, but they need to get out pretty quickly. And I have a third one which will probably be ready this Fall. Groan.

D, glad to be of any help. As you can see, everyone has his own methods. As Jongware stated somewhere along the road, some of us (me included) started long time ago with programs such as Display write, Pagemaker, Ventura etc. Each program had it's own pro and cons, but we learned a lot over the years. Teaching yourself Indesing isn't going to be easy, but as you say, if you can master formatting your own books, you'll be able to search for better and more refined options in indesign, and thus making your work more easy and better.

good luck with the next books.
