Greetings –
I recently picked up an InDesign project that had been originated by another person: a novel to be published in both Kindle and ePub formats. The author was unhappy that the original layout person could not fix certain problems to his satisfaction. Had I known at the beginning of my work what I knew two days later, I would simply have redone the whole thing from scratch – also known as 20/20 hindsight.
While I was able to fix all the problems with the Kindle version, I'm still having certain problems with the ePub file. The author had specified the chapter titles in color, and had also inserted centered asterisks to indicate a change of scene, time, etc. In the Kindle version, all these elements display appropriately in various devices. However, in the ePub version, the display on the chapter titles is erratic – some in color, some in auto black. Even within a line, two characters will be in color. While the color is consistent on the centered asterisks, when I preview it on an iPad in iBooks, most display as left justified, although a few are centered. (They do display correctly in Adobe Digital Editions.)
I've gone back to all the chapter titles, checked the paragraph styles and character styles and they are all correct. On the asterisks, I've made sure that the characters and the paragraph return are all included in the centered paragraph style.
Any suggestions for ways to correct/update these quirks would be gratefully accepted.
