This is so weird, and I hope I explain it clearly. I recently upgraded to InDesign CS5.5 (included in the entire Adobe upgrade suite). When I go to export “command E” the PDF opens in Acrobat, no problem. Once I look at the PDF and decide to make some design changes in InDesign, when I go to re-write the PDF file, the original PDF opens.

As I go-around, I have to export to my desktop to get the updated PDF. When the updated PDF is open in Acrobat and I try to “save as” to the correct folder, I get this message, ” Document could not be saved. This file is open.” However, the file is not open, so I don't get it. Even if I trash the old PDF, I still get this message. Obviously, the old file is “invisible” somewhere but I don't where or why.

It's very annoying to have to go through these extra steps just to re-write a PDF. What am I doing wrong? This never happened when I was using the CS4 suite of Adobe programs.

FWIW I'm not seeing any diff in CS4 vs. 5.5 as far as saving PDFs is concerned. I think you might be having an operating system issue (it thinks a file is open when it's not?)

The behavior in InDesign is the same as always. If you export a PDF and tell InDesign to open it in Acrobat right after, it'll do that. If a (closed) PDF of the same name exists in the same location, you'll get a prompt from ID asking if it's okay to overwrite it before it creates and shows the PDF.

If the PDF is open, ID will churn for a while (if I recall correctly) and then give you an error alert because it can't overwrite an open file. In other words it doesn't bother asking if it's okay to overwrite, because if you said yes, it wouldn't be able to anyway.
