      Greetings,

I'm quite a newcomer with InDesign. We recently went from Quark to ID CS3 at the office. Here's the little problem I ran into:

We are publishing a few newspapers and all of them have a different website. I was going to make a “master” document for each newspaper and define a text variable that would have the same name “Website” but will have different values in each. Example, on one document the variable “Website” will have “www.example1.com” while in another one it might be “www.example2.com”.

I also intend to have only one library for them all as they all have the same graphic standards. Let say I'm making a tag that will be used to invite people on the newpaper website. I create the tag and insert the text variable “Website” as the URL. This this is working well when I copy/paste the tag from one document to the other, or simply drag and drop it. The URL get updated with the right variable for that newpaper. But if I put the same tag in a library, whatever the object type i assign it, when I drop it into the other document, the variable definition get overwriten but the one “included” in the library object.

Does anyone have a solution on this? Maybe i'm missing an information, a little trick or maybe it's just not possible. I'd rather have a native solution than a plugin.

So far, my search on the web lead to nowhere so I came here (the best InDesign related site) to ask for a little help.

      Thanks in advance…

P.S. Sorry for that poor english of mine, not my usual language.

I think this might be something that was fixed in CS4. I am using CS5 and it works okay (both if I use a library item and if I save the object as a snippet). Many people are using snippets instead of libraries now.

Thanks you for the time you took to reply. I just tried to do it with a snippet, only to get the same result as with a library. I wish I would have CS4 or newer nearby to test a bit but since my company probably won't upgrade anytime soon, I'm kinda stuck with this problem.

So far, my only two options would be:

      1. Use a document as a library (probably the best choice even if it is a bit cumbersome)
      2. Use a library and put every possibilities in it.

      Thanks again…
